I have to admit I was a bit skeptical thinking I was going to Grand Forks yesterday because it was windy and rainy all morning and before I left it started snowing. After I got 20 minutes out of town the snow stopped and the sun started to peek out. I thought heck it's gonna be a nice afternoon after all.
After meeting up with Brad and John we were off the river in search of you guessed it Catfish. Moments after we put all 6 lines out we nail the first fish. It was the smallest one of the day probably 3 lbs. They just got bigger and BIGGER from then on. To sum it up a bit we caught over 32 yes THIRTY TWO catfish in just under 4 hours. I was in awe the whole trip and couldn't believe how many we were catching. This by FAR was the most productive cat trip I've been on and I owe it all to Captain Brad.
The pictures tell a thousand words, and yes you will see a picture of a triple 10's we got. As John said on the trip "We spanked 'em".
Thanks again Brad for an outstanding time. My smile was ear to ear on my way back to Fargo. I've showed the pics to my family and they were a bit jealous I think
If anyone is looking to battle these kitties you best call Brad, the time is now, THE BITE IS ON!!!!!
The cat fishing is on the Mississippi is very hot right now. I fished it Friday evening 5/9/08 just north of the St Cloud Hospital. My girl friend and I caught about 25 cats in under three hours. The largest being just under 9 lbs.. The water level is high and fast. Stay around the breaks and near the fast water. Chicken liver is always a good call and its cheap too….good times!!
Me and Sarah stopped in there today on our way home. The store is well stocked in my opinion. The clear bait tanks at the counter are a neat touch. They have a huge selection of rods, reels, electronics, trolling motors, and tackle. They should very well in that location.
There should be fish moving into the rivers I would imagine, Water is still cold. Mid May can be good stealheading, if you can try to hit some of the rivers north of Duluth go for it.
I am going back to work tommorow. I have to work in Duluth at the Lakewood water treatment plant on the north shore so I plan on fishing after work somewhere.
Good luck if you get out!

~ life is to short only to fish weekends ~
No electronics that day. We were in a little 14 foot boat. My buddies spots were not producing so I said "Where did you say you were pounding them this winter?". We went to that spot in 15-20' of water which is in a north bay. After messing around there for a half hour I said we should try in shallow in the northern part of the bay where the water would be warmer. I caught a nice bass and then on my next cast I got a small crappie. We anchored and it was steady action for 2 hours with 50-70 crappies and bass caught. A fun day we had.
Sucks when the bite gets out. People pound them in a hurry.
I've never been able to find the fish in the deep water close by. Do you try to mark them with the depthfinder/sonar first, or do you just start casting? (are they suspended?) A couple spots where I fish the bays are closed off the lake by basically a boat length of space...would they be right on the breaks outside of these gaps? Just any general pointers by the guys who catch them on the surrounding ledges.
Got them in shallow and in adjacent deeper water. We were fishing near a road and within an hour there were 5 other boats on top of us. And some people fishing from shore. I was like that Saturday and today so I think that spot will be fished out quickly.
We were using slip bobbers. I used a yellow hair jig and Pete went with a flu flu. Crappie minnows hooked through the head.
My buddies back home said they weren't in our "hotspots" shallow spawning bays quite yet. Hopefully by the end of the next week for 'some' of lakes in the shallow muddy bottom bays. (i only say some because I heard of others catching them in the bays on a few lakes to the South East of where they were fishing).
not sure I agree with the warm water clearing up deal, I see more of that during mid hot summer bites in 8 ft or less on many lakes when surface temps are 75 plus! Probably varies from lake to lake?
