The big walleyes are still on fire. The fields East of Long Point and North of Zippel Bay continues to be good. Pulling spinners and jigging during the morning, crankbaits effective all day. West bar of garden producing as well as Little Oak area. Trolling cranks out in the deep mud bringing in walleyes of all sizes including many trophy walleyes. 24 -32 feet. Chartreuse, pink, UV colors working good most days and purple on cloudy days.
On the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing "keep season" is open until Sept 30. Pike and smallies are being found in tributaries into Rainy River. Wabanica, Baudette Bay, and Clementson always holding good fish. Weed edges holding a variety of fish.

Up at the NW Angle... In Minnesota, walleyes biting while bait fishing with a jig and minnow on top of structure like reefs and rocks. Bottom bouncers and crankbaits in a little deeper water such as 24-28. Some trophy pike and big muskies being caught near walleye schools. Canadian walleyes spread out in deeper mud areas around 24 ft. Muskies being caught on a variety of bucktails over weeds and rocks.

Drifting and trolling spinners and crawlers east of Long Point has been on fire. Reports of one pass being mainly slot fish and the next pass picking away at walleyes and saugers for the fry pan. Some anglers even jigging with good success. Trolling cranks out in the deep mud good when fishing slows in the afternoon. 24 -32 feet. As always hammered gold, chartreuse, pink, UV colors are good starting points.
On the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing "keep season" is open until Sept 30. Hearing good reports. Pike and smallies are being found in tributaries into Rainy River. Weed edges holding a variety of fish.

Up at the NW Angle... Water temps are consistently in the mid to high 70s. In Minnesota, walleyes being caught on reefs with a jig and minnow. Bottom bouncers and crank-baits in 24-28 feet of water. Covering a lot of ground is key when the fish aren't schooled together. Lots of 40+ Pike caught while trolling, reports of large muskies also. Mud bottomed areas deeper than 25ft for best results on Canadian side.

An incredible week for trophy walleyes. Walleyes super aggressive this week. Drifting and trolling spinners and crawlers in the morning/evenings on fire. Tends to slow down a bit for mid-day. Trolling cranks out in the mud in the afternoon has been really good. 24 -32 feet. Some nice pike, many over 40" being caught amongst the walleyes. Some go to colors, hammered gold, chartreuse, pink, UV colors.

On the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing "keep season" is open until Sept 30. River is still chocolate milk which means very little visibility. Finding clean water for pike and smallies will increase odds, tributaries into Rainy a good starting point.

Up at the NW Angle... Walleyes are on fire on both MN and Canada side of lake. Lots of fish around structure. Some nice walleyes are being found in shallower water like 16-20' and also out deep in 26-30'. Spinners over rocks and reefs continues to put fish in the live well. Muskies being caught on bucktails on rocks and weeds. Trophy walleyes coming on muskie baits!

Walleye fishing remains strong. Drifting and trolling on the sand bars very effective this past week, many large walleyes and plenty of great eaters! The major bug hatch seems to be over (for now). Some anglers using crankbaits on lead core but most still finding good success drifting with spinners and crawlers.

On the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing "keep season" is now open until Sept 30. Anglers can keep one sturgeon per year in the 45-50 inch range or over 75 inches. MN catch and release records continue to be broken, bring measuring tape and camera. Smallmouth bass anglers finding nice bass in typical go to areas, rock, bridges, current breaks, etc.

Up at the NW Angle... Fishing is excellent on both sides of the border. Walleyes being found in wind blown areas in shallow water or out deep in 24-27 feet. Spinners over mud working very good. Orange or hammered gold hot colors. Of course, jigs still producing in structure. Muskie anglers catching big fish over 50" this past week.

Walleye and sauger bite excellent this week. Bite has transitioned to spinners with some still fishing a jig and shiner. Good numbers of fish around Garden, Knight, Pine Island, and out near Rocky Point. Many fishing in 24-27 feet of water. When the wind was right drifting with a spinner was deadly. Some anglers using crankbaits on lead core with good success.
On the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing "keep season" opens this week, July 1 - Sep 30. Very strong population of sturgeon in river with a lot of big fish. Smallmouth bass anglers finding nice bass in typical go to areas, rock, bridges, current breaks, etc.

Up at the NW Angle... In Minnesota, some walleyes shallow (5-10') with lots of mayflys and crayfish in bellies. Reports have been stellar for muskies so far. Fishing on both sides of the border has been excellent for muskies, smallmouth bass, and of course, walleyes/saugers. Spinners over mud and jigging around rocks. Orange has been strong color for walleyes, perhaps due to crayfish.

Walleyes and saugers being caught around the entire lake with the mayfly hatch 2 weeks early this year. Some areas holding keepers (under 19.5") with some slots mixed in (19.5" - 28") and some mainly holding slot fish with the occasional trophy being caught (over 28"). Typically after the mayfly hatch, the spinner bite really turns on. Jig and a minnow was the main tactic used this week while some pulled spinners when the wind was right. Some shallow walleyes on spinners in 5-10 feet near pine island primarily when some breeze.
Rainy River smallmouth bass being caught up and down the river on shorelines, inlets, various structure and docks. Sturgeon fishing "keep season" opens again July 1 - Sep 30. Most walleye fishing taking place on the lake with the local walleyes always an option.

Up at the NW Angle... In Minnesota, spinners catching walleyes and saugers of all sizes in multiple depths. Walleyes and saugers spitting up lots of mayflys. Some good muskies being caught in back bays and over rock points. Both MN and Ontario muskie seasons on LOW are open. Smallmouth bass continue to pound plastic baits. Fishing on both sides of the border has been excellent.

Some great fishing going on right now in various places on the lake and many depths! Most anglers still using a jig and a minnow but trending towards pulling spinners and crawlers. Pulling spinners in anywhere from 5-25 feet throughout the day and evening. Jig and spinner colors, gold mixed with bright colors such as chartreuse, yellow, pink and orange.
Rainy River is still slower for walleyes. Some nice bass being caught along shorelines and docks. A good population of walleyes stay in the River year round. Sturgeon fishing keep season opens again July 1 - Sep 30.

Up at the NW Angle... In Minnesota, walleye fishing with a jig and minnow or spinners bringing in limits of walleyes and saugers. Depth varies from 5-15 feet in the evening and 18-27 during the day. Chartreuse with gold and blue and white jigs. Canadian walleyes at 22-26 feet have been the most aggressive.

Great fishing continues with good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught from Rocky Point, Long Point, Zippel Bay, Pine Island, Knight Island and in the basin! A jig and a frozen shiner is the ticket while anchored up in 15-23 feet during the day. Some fish are sliding up into 10-13 feet for a evening bite. Lots of big girls over 28" being caught. Water on the lake and river is still low, rain last week is helping to raise water levels.

Rainy River was pretty quiet this week with only a morning bite. Some big females making their way out to lake but a good population stays in the River year round. Jig and a frozen shiner being bounced off bottom. Sturgeon fishing closed May 16- June 30. Sturgeon keep season opens again July 1 - Sep 30.

Up at the NW Angle... Good numbers of walleyes are being found in the shallows from 5-10 feet and slightly deeper in 17-23 feet. Walleyes were spawning on the lake this past week as water is colder than river.

On the home stretch to Minnesota Fishing Opener May 12th. Ice continues to break up, float around and melt on the lake. Much like 2014 with a late ice off walleyes were stacked in shallows and Rainy River/Four Mile Bay. Most anglers on opener will be bouncing a jig and frozen shiner off bottom. Pike season is on fire right now. Pike tournament last weekend yielded 34 pike over 40 inches for 2 days. A big smelt laid on bottom, trolling crankbaits and buzz baits are all options to catch this big girls.
Rainy River is looking to be the go to spot for Minnesota Fishing opener as walleyes of all sizes will be looking to feast after spawning late. Sturgeon fishing catch and release May 8 - 15. Water clarity should be in good shape come opener.

Up at the NW Angle... Ice is disappearing and is clear around the Angle Inlet area for a few miles. Look for more open water to open up each day with warmer temperatures early in the week and rain in the forecast. Much like the south shore anglers will be using a jig and a minnow along shore lines.

Starting with lake... ice continues to melt in a big way. Travel on the lake is very unsafe at this time. Pike season is open all year as border waters. Big pike are close to coming into bays for boat anglers. A big smelt laid on bottom, trolling crankbaits and buzz baits are all options to catch this big girls. Minnows of all kinds must be authorized through bait dealers.
Rainy River sturgeon fishing... The keep season lasts through May 7. Catch and release May 8 - 15. Anglers who remain mobile fared better again this past week as the Little and Big Fork Rivers opened up. Water clarity already clearing and will be cleared up by opener. Luckily sturgeon feed by smell in dirty water. Many big 60+ inch fish caught along with many smaller sturgeon. Finding deeper holes and laying a sturgeon rig (18" leader of 60 lb test with a 5/0 circle hook) with a crawler/shiner mix and a 3-5 ounce no roll sinker is the ticket. All Rainy River Landings (including Wheeler's Point) are open to all boats. Most landings in bays open as well. Predictions are the Rainy River will be full of walleyes for the MN Fishing Opener May 12.

Up at the NW Angle... As ice disappears, anglers will target pike by boat. We are very close to prime time for pike. Ice deteriorating very quickly as there is more current amongst islands.
