Just made 10 pounds of Swedish sausage. This is my own recipe that I have been working on for about 2 years. Most of my previous try's have been good , but there was always something missing. Adjusting amounts of the spices were the key. Especially switching over to white pepper from black pepper and the right amount of allspice. This worked for me but to each their own. I have the recipe and step by step in my site below in the Homemade Sausage page. good luck.

Great point Sherman. Most of those spear shacks are found right off the boat landing to the right and off the Red Barn landing to the left and surrounding the shallow bar in the area where folks park there on the ice. good luck.

You can get to good water either way. More parking at the launch and you can get to deeper water quicker if that is what you want. The red barn area is a good place to park as well. Drive on from there and keep to your right. There is a shallow bar there. When you start seeing old holes you know you are at the drop off to deeper water so stay on the shallow area. that shallow area does not keep going south all along the shoreline When you see the first dock you know it's deeper. All along that bar where it starts to drop off is good. However it also has a lot of traffic, especially on weekends. good luck.

Feathers you are spot on. The DNR is now considering new panfish regs as we speak. Look for changes next year. We must protect our fishery and slots are working in lakes where introduced. We can fish and bring home a meal without hurting our fish population. I'm personally for a statewide 4 walleye limit for example. Plenty for a meal especially when there are more than one in the boat. good luck. good luck.

Just follow the frontage road on the west side by the lake. When you almost get to the northern part of the lake you will see the barn and where folks drive out on the right side. Be carefull about driving a truck out to the smelt hole. Last I heard there was anywhere from 10 to 13 inches of ice out there [and that was near shore]. If you walk out from the boat landing and go to the right and straight out you will be in 60 feet of water within a short distance so you really don't have to walk out far. good luck.

Way to go Joe!! When I fished the lake in the late 60's we were pretty basic. Crawler harnesses and a spiner with a minnow or just bobber and minnow. Back then we caught crappies and walleye's mostly along with pike. There is nearly 3,000 acres of water there. Since the 60's when there was a low population of sunfish and no bass that I knew of things have changed.

Populations of bass and sunfish along with crappies have gone up. Especially with the sunfish and bass, they took a toll on the walleye fry. Bringing on the new walleye regs. Crappies have been there for decades and so has the fishing pressure. The famouse "crappie villiage" by high banks have been a feature as long as I can remember.

Sure there is fishing pressure on hard water. However how many years have we seen that it was hard to even get on the ice because of heavy snow and slush ect. Many. So it all evens out one way or another. All the lakes near Duluth get pressure and so do lakes around the state. Doesn't mean we as anglers get our "limits" all the time or any fish at times regardless of how good we think we are. Get out and have fun. take a kid with you when you can. We need to build a future of fishermen herre in the state. good luck.

Thanks Sherman for the report. My best results over the years were to get there early in the morning and go shallow away from folks. That seemed to be always the best bite for me but I have caught them during the day as well. Key is to be alone as possible and not to make much noise. Every day is different. I've gone and caught nothing at times and then the next day doing the same thing I get a lot of action. I'm just glad to get out. My wife had both knee's operated on and I'll be stuck here at home until next week. She is able to drive now to work but needs the truck because there is more room for her legs. So I'm stuck with the van and can't get my portable in there or auger. She should be able to take the van a couple of days by next week. good luck.

Thanks I appreciate it. Not thick enough for driving a truck on yet, especially in deeper water. Hope you get some more, stay safe. i fish all day myself. I will put a tip up out for pike or a big brown. Last year I caught a 4 pound laker in 5 feet of water on a waxie and plain hook. I seen 4 or five cruise by slowly and two were bigger than the one I caught. good luck.

One thing that I do is not to go hole hopping all around the shallows. Instant recipe for failure. Find a spot in the shallows and stay there. Rainbows roam all around the lake so they will come by. The more noise the less fish. Anyone got any ice thickness reports? good luck.
