Most likely closer to the bottom then crappies.
Try to find a spot that the deeper water makes a v or a u shape towards the shore or a sallower area , and fish the inside corner, and try just out side the weed line, other times right in the weeds,I have caught larger gills in sallow too. It varies, smaller lakes tend to be better early ice. Same as any fish food oxygen and cover are what is needed to find fish just depends on lake conditions. Even in winter water temps make a difference too.

Sonar or no sonar it was slow on sat 12/6/14 for me. Some guys got fish the ones I know of fished sallow 8-5' and got some walleyes. We however did not. This was not on Big Cormorant for me Big Cormorant has been a dusk to dark bite over the years.

Yes indeed. I sight fish when ever possible.
For all species of fish. Late ice has the most opportunity.

41" Thats a big Northern for sure.
Once in a life time fish for many.
You could have a very nice mount with both those fish.
