Since the DL thread has been mostly quiet, I thought I would offer some reports from a fairly good open water season (so far). I have been around the area from DL, to Perham, to Ottertail and had a lot of fun with the crappies, northerns, and walleyes as well.

All fishing has been from 4-12 fow so far and we found walleyes last Monday in 7.5-9 fow in short weeds.

Planning to go drag some leeches around tomorrow evening and maybe starting in the same depth range.

Picked up a few big northerns the last weekend of May over 12 fow with this 36 incher taking drag on 5 solid runs.

from previous post...

Good sets with long handles and tight closed distances are extremely hard to come by. So if you can't find any on Ebay or antique shops, try the model from Ice Shanty Gear. I tried for quite some time to find a set similar to my father's and couldn't. I picked up a set of the Ice Shanty model @ the big decoy show in Perham a couple years ago and they are pretty solid.

The icesaws.com model (blue with wood handle) is the best that I have used, worth the money. The other models have had too large of kerf on them, which results in cutting a wider cut than necessary....more work than needed. The lock pin can be a bit of a pain on the icesaws model though.

Saturday was a great day on the ice, but we struggled to find anything that would bite until late in the day. Got into some nice gills in 22', all tight to the bottom. Waxies were the only thing they would bite on. I hooked my biggest ever, this 10.5" pig...

Nick,

If your daughter can help mine with the patience side of the outing, I have a great march/april spot for the kids. She caught 10 fish in fifteen minutes,... then it was off to grandma's house... Should have taken a pic of the camera screen, full 360 of sunnies with a few crappies.

Nice work, way to stay after 'em.

I haven't got out since the 23rd but had a killer day with nice gills, perch up to 12", and crappies all out of the same hole. Hope to get a few more trips in before the ice is gone.

I went to a local lake sunday morning that doesn't get a lot of snowmobile or vehicle traffic and was able to get around with the front end chained up. Pushed snow with the front bumper quite a bit, but only had to back up once. Slush was under 4" in the areas that were flooded.

Set up in 16' and had a decent sunny bite with a few crappies mixed in. Both green toads & moon glows worked with waxies.

Ray, I'll chain up my '78 if you want help breaking trail next time. I like to keep the abuse on the old rust bucket!

Nice fish!
