After heading to Red and LOW the last couple years for our annual guy's fishing trip, we are heading back to Wishbone at Cass Lake due to their unmatched customer service and just overall good attitudes and friendliness. Just curious if anyone has been pulling anything out of Cass this year yet. Good luck to you all!

What kind of oil ?

It’s been a while since I made my own fish. What kind of oil do you use? My moms always used solid crisco and that just seems a bit much for me. I was thinking canola. Any thoughts?

Also, shore lunch...my father in law always dipped his fillets in shore lunch, then re-dipped them in beer batter made of shore lunch. Anyone ever do that? If so, any tips?

I am going to use a brand new “frying saucer” a friend got me as a housewarming gift.

Was out to eagle lake in orrock and there are dead fish everywhere. Mostly sunnies and crappies. Anyone have any idea why?

When you say it looked like someone opened a pepper shaker on the meat, how bad was it? I have eaten many of fish with what a lot of people call "worms". MN DNR says safe to eat, and the way I figure, frying fish will pretty much kill anything.

Thanks for both replies. Kind of what I expected. I have a cabin on the lake, never overcrowded in the summer for fishing and normally don’t have a problem finding fish. Never anything huge as the poster said, but fun enough especially with my nephew. Have not tried much in winter but wast think8ng of giving it a go since I have a place to stay!

You say those are beef ribs? Looks like pork baby backs or pork spareribs, AND they look delicious. The only beef ribs I ever see at the grocery are short ribs which are much thicker. Where do you buy those ribs you cooked? I would love to get some to smoke myself! Awesome Q view!

My first mate on this trip wasn't Jerry. It was a guy also named John. Big John (Captain) and Lil' John (first mate). Lil' John was also awesome. He said it was his first year doing this, and you could not tell. He knew what he was doing while setting lines, netting fish, and could answer all questions asked. Both Johns are some good dudes.

Was up on Superior on 9/2. Brought my nephew out for his 15th birthday. He loves fishing but has never been on big water. Never on Mille Lacs, Red, Winnie, or LOW (except for one ice fishing trip). Went out with Captain John with Optimum Charters. Excellent weather, good times. I highly recommend Optimum Charters. Had some recommendations users of this website, but then had a friend swear by these guys so I decided to go with them. Hoping to go back next spring/summer so we can actually have a chance at some Salmon.
