We were fishing in 70-90 foot of water. They would come mainly within the bottom ten feet, but some would chase it up to just below the ice. Just about every fish did something different on the graph so it is hard to say.

I was out there the 20th... I think it was that weekend on first ice in duluth, but we did very well! We ended up catching 5 lakers in 1 and a half days of fishing and it was a blast! Don't know if the fishing is still that good, but that is my report from couple weeks ago!

I was maybe going to try and go out and try to find some Lakers for the first time tomorrow. I went twice last year and had no luck, which I could have put more time into it, but was just fine walleye fishing. Anyways, what will I need to bring out bait and pole/line wise? Also, I have no idea where to go and I know fishing by groups is normally a bad decision, but should I just fish the outskirts of those groups or just find my own spot on the lake? Any help would be very useful!

Wow that is one hell of a day man! I am transferring from Vermilion to Bemidji next year, hope to have even half of the luck you are having out on Bemidji. What would you do for a day trip up there? Would you just stay in Bemidji or make a trip up to red or over to Leech? Not familiar with that area too well so just trying to gain a little knowledge before the ice fishing season next year!

I put about 20 feet of mono on before putting on the braided line as a backer. That seems to work really well compared to using it without a backer. The line does not twist up as much and does not slip at all.

Thanks for all of the advice gentleman! I made it out to the lake the other day and put the tips to the test. I caught more sunfish and crappies than I have on that lake all year. Keeping the jig a foot or two above the fish seemed to be the real trick! Also leaving the jig damn close to still when the fish swam up to the bait seemed to produce more bites also! Thanks again and good luck this year out on the ice!

Thanks a bunch for the advice! I am going out tomorrow and will have to try and keep the jigging strokes shorter. Hopefully it works and I can get some of those ones that aren't so sure about biting to bite!

Most of the time during the winter months I go out and target only walleyes, which I feel like I have gotten the feel for pretty well. Recently this has changed and I have become addicted adventuring out to new lakes and trying to find the Sunfish and Crappies, but I cant get them to bite. I mainly go out and drill about 30 holes and fish around until I find a group off fish swimming by where I can get maybe one to bit. I have had no problem marking the fish, but I cant get them to bite while mainly using wax worms and some sort of tungsten jig. Is there anything I'm missing here coming from mainly Walleye fishing?
