Thanks for the great detailed reports RetiredOnOsakis! Love this lake and have been fishing it for years all the way back to renting cabins at sunset resort when it was still open. Any chance you could get a picture or two of the ice?

Just an example of one small lake. Here in Andover there is a small lake [maybe 50 acres] called Round Lake which is just off Round Lake Blvd. I drive by there almost daily. I watched it freeze over a few weeks ago when we had some colder weather. There were guys out there with ATV's buzzing around then.

Then came the warm front and it completely thawed out. Yesterday it was almost froze over with pockets of open water. Now this is a very shallow lake. My opinion is if this lake has open water [probably froze over today] then there are no safe lakes in the metro area. One or two more weeks in my opinion around here. Deeper lakes will be safe last as they freeze last. good luck.

100% agree with Reinhard. I also drive by Round lake everyday and if it still had open pockets yesterday, I wouldn't risk it on any lake in the metro yet.

One thing to keep in mind is that many of these metro lakes froze in the same fashion leaving several very small pockets of open water scattered at random across the lake because of the wind. With that said, it may look like the lake is completely froze today and may be 2-3" out a hundred yards but walk across one of the small pockets that was open yesterday you might be swimming.

I've been fishing the rum my whole life and no way I would take that boat on the rum except for around anoka.

I would also be interested as I spend a lot of time fishing from my canoe and kayak.
