Tyler, I am thinking about a weekend trip to Red prior to the opener to chase crappies. Have you been out chasing them yet?

Thanks,

Wally

I just saw a guy out in a portable on South Center this afternoon in Center City. He was fishing the far East bay of the lake which probably locked up a couple days ago. The main lake had some ice coverage but also still had large areas that were open water.

Looking for an update on ice thickness and snow cover in the area. How have they been biting during this 2 week cold spell?

Thanks!

Gotta love the jerkoffs that try to call people out on an over-limit when they don't even know how many people you were fishing with.

Jealousy brings out the best in some people :)

Nice catch!

What a difference a week of warm weather makes. Water temp was 39 degrees opening weekend but it was a balmy 50 degrees this Saturday. My buddy was actually out on Friday and said he had a reading of 57 degrees before the cool down. Wind made fishing tough Saturday but we were able to find a massive school of crappies and had a steady bite all day. We kept 12 for a meal that were 10.5 - 11.5 inches. All others were released. Prob caught between 75-100 in total. Nothing over 11.5" so we'll try to hunt down the hogs again next weekend. Tried walleyes for an hour or so with no luck. 8 feet of water was the magic number and crappie minnow and/or gulp minnows were the ticket.

Walleyes should be going good very soon!

Nice fish. Anyone been getting any walleyes? The bite has been real slow so far!

Just got back from WI for the fishing opener. Almost all of the smaller lakes we checked in the Polk/Burnett Co area were open. Water temps were 39-40 degrees on Sat and fishing conditions weren't ideal. The walleye bite was pretty much non existent. Crappies were deep and holding tight to the bottom but you could catch them by jigging 6-8 inches off the bottom.

Just got the report tonight. The lake we are on in Burnett is 100% ice free so my friend's prediction was spot on. Looks like we will get to get the boat wet finally. I will stop at Frankie's in Chisago on the way up. Hopefully they will have leeches. I'm not too worried about using them in the cold water temps as we have used them in 40 degree water before and they worked just fine.

Good luck for whoever is going out this weekend.

Just got an update from the area today. These warm temps and rain are really starting to do a number on the ice. The lake we are on in Burnett County has lost almost half it's ice in the last 48 hours. My buddy said ours will be ice free by Wednesday but it is a smaller body of water that usually is usually quick to open up. Larger lakes will almost certainly still have ice but there will be many small bodies of water that will be fishable by boat not to mention the St. Croix River as well.

If anyone else makes it up there this weekend post a report and let us know how the fishing was.

Good luck!

Planning on heading to my cabin next weekend for Wisconsin opener. Wondering if the bait stores are carrying leaches in the area? Wasn't sure if this cold spring effected the supply or not. Does anyone know who will have leeches in stock for next weekend.

Also, a buddy of mine that lives in the area did some checking on Saturday and the majority of the lakes are still pretty locked up. The bigger lakes will probably have no shot at having fishable water by next weekend. However a lot of the smaller lakes should be fishable by opener. I know the lake we are on was starting to go fast and with these next few warm days and rain it should be 80-90% open if not ice free.
