In 1995 the United States Supreme Court ruled that the treaty could no longer be violated. Since then, the lake has been managed to recognize both the bands rights' and "our" rights.

To bad we cant get the constitution written into treaties also so the supreme court would stop violating that. At the end of the day they do by slowly chipping away the edges and we have to live with it. Dual standards once again.

Wait a second...............................

What happened to the foreign country?

This is how it works, they are a sovereign nation and live under their own rules when they are caught doing something illegal and they are US citizens when the Taxpayers are footing the bill for schools, roads, housing, etc. even though they are flush with cash from their monopoly on casinos.

In the good old days, foreign invaders were defeated and destroyed. In todays liberal world, we let them do what they want and we pay for it.

It would be nice if everyone in the US lived under the same rules.

Thanks for bringing this article to my attention. I like the fact that it has a pole attached to it and the second highest number of responses voted for NO. JUST FISH WITH ARTIFICIALS. YOU CALL YOURSELF A FISHERMAN?? at 30%, right behind DON'T CARE. I'M FISHING ELSEWHERE at 35%.

It's sad that Gary Roach doesn't think people can catch fish on Jerkbaits, plastic swim baits, shad raps, and hair jigs on Mille Lacs. It's sad that so many walleye fisherman are unwilling to learn techniques that will increase walleye survival post release. smh

Are you married? GF? Kids? I know my wife won't step in the boat if she had to jig plastics, troll cranks, or cast jerkbaits.

We visit Mille Lacs multiple times a year, including trips to state parks and the BWCA. We enjoy throwing out a leech under a bobber without the constant attention of a pole in your hand, casting baits, and motor noise while trolling.

Its not that I don't want to learn new techniques, I already use those techniques when I fish the river without the fam. I wouldn't visit Mille Lacs without the option of taking the wife/kids out to throw a leech under a bobber. Just wouldn't happen. And it has nothing to do with me being "unwilling to learn new techniques."

Now that the live bait ban has been lifted we will visit Mille Lacs a couple times this summer.

I was just discussing this mess with my family. We have fished ML opener for decades. But without live bait we were ready to cancel the whole thing. A pontoon full of people/kids can fish bobbers with leeches and actually enjoy the evening.

+1 for me as well. I was about ready to scrap my opener plans. Now that I can spend the time with my family and friends watching bobbers/leaches, I will probably hit the big pond even if I can't keep any fish.

I can go somewhere else, work my tail off, fight the crowds and possibly not catch or keep anything. Or I can go to my usual spots on the pond, fish more relaxed, catch a ton of fish, and have some fun.

JUST FISH WITH ARTIFICIALS. YOU CALL YOURSELF A FISHERMAN??

Well, BP, to answer your question - yes, I call myself a fisherman. So does my father, who at 81, will be joining me for opener again.(something I am very thankful for, btw). Rounding out the crew are my 78yr old uncle and 9yr old boy. They both also claim to be fisherman.

I would enjoy watching the responses from my crew if you told them they need to use artificials in order to be considered fisherman. My dad considers it damned near treasonous if you try something other than a jig and minnow on opener. I brought along some leeches a few yrs back and he asked who I was trying to impress by being "fancy".......

Probably the most ignorant Sounding post yet from someone that fishes bass tournaments. At least i know your true colors now. Ignorant because like many we know better than to fish artificial that early in the year and why most everyone will be using live bait.

I do not have a paycheck tied to the lake so I am able to have concern about the lake only, nothing else, so I'm free to formulate an opinion about the situation with out prejudice, emotion, bias and any other contaminant.

Doesn't mean my thoughts or opinions are right.

I do firmly believe a lot of people, from all corners and sides have some wrong to them concerning this matter.
