Steve Hatcher and I found about 3-4 inches of good ice on a lake north of Duluth.. No fish but a blast just getting out and popping some holes! The wind was on the unreal side to say the least!

Island Lake is totally open at this time with 3-4 ft rollers and very little ice in the bays.

Fish lake is frozen though not fishable... yet.

Cool good job nice pics, if you would of gone alittle closer to that point or Island you would of caught fish.

First ice always good. One thing location location then presentation first part most important

The closer to the points and rocks the thinner the ice so we opted for a day of fishing and not catching. If we could have gone a another 30 yds and stayed a couple more hours we would have caught eyes for sure, but the ice was getting real spooky. The winds were at least a sustained 25 mph and a cold wet walk back was not an option.

The last pic of me is on Fish Lake so I technically made it out on 2 lakes today

Glad to see you guys made it back.

When I saw you out there it made we want to go get all my gear and join ya.

I would have walked out and said HI to ya's today but I didn't have my boot spikes or hand spikes with me.

You guys are incredibly brave!

I was on the ice at two lakes also but the tires broke through on fish at the landing so I guees I was on one lake, and in the other.

Spikes were not what you needed except to help from blowing away, the wind was horrid starting about 10 ft off shore. The ice is hard as steel except around rock island.
When you walk out you will see the white line on the ice where we stopped which was at about 12 ft. and rising fast toward the island.

I'm heading back up tomorrow afternoon for the sunset bite, anyone else going?

Good to see someone made it out. Nice to hear you made it back to shore also. Tim, what are you doing in that last photo?
