Went out this morning to check on my house on Waconia Lake. The warm temps and a little rain overnight has left the lake covered with water. Many houses (including mine) have an inch or so of water around them. The banking on most houses has melted away. I was fortunate to have a couple drifts nearby that hadn't disappeared yet and was able to re-bank my house. Hope it holds up. With 30+ mph winds tomorrow I will be keeping a close eye on things. Wishing now that I had just pulled it off today.

There are many many houses on Waconia. If one of them is yours I'd suggest keeping an eye on it. This weather sucks. Things should firm up on Wednesday but warmer temps again next week.

The same could be said for most lakes in southern Mn. I am sure quite a few houses will need to be chipped out of the ice by the end of the week.

Wagners access was getting pretty sloppy but still navigable.

Freezing down is not the biggest issue. The wind opening up holes under or around the fish house is my biggest concern. On Jan 3 2003 lots of houses on Waconia went down because of warm weather and wind.

In Towne Marina Lake Waconia Ice Report - 1/7/19
Hey Everyone! Itís Monday, January 7th and we were on the ice early in the afternoon. With the mild weekend temps and overnight rain last night, we now have some standing water on a lot of the lake, especially around groups of fish houses. If you have a fish house on Lake Waconia, we suggest paying very close attention to it in the next 24 hours. It might be a good idea to check on it today and certainly by tomorrow afternoon. The forecast calls for temps to remain above 32 overnight and winds to be gusting into the upper 20 or low 30 mph range. With high winds and water on the ice, the wind will help increase swirling into any open fishing holes under your fish house (If your house is blocked too high allowing wind to swirl underneath). We suggest blocking your house on 2x4ís or less to keep it as close to the ice as possible without allowing for it to freeze in. Also, moving the house off open holes is a good idea as well. Some have even decided to pull their houses off the lake for a day or 2 and wait for the cold later this week. At this point, we are leaving our rental houses on the lake, as we have them blocked correctly. This is not a panic situation at the moment, but one that we advise should be taken seriously. Our access remains open for use, but may be limited if conditions worsen. We will update when we know more.

Just got back from checking on the house this morning. Fortunately it appears that it got cold enough soon enough to get a little freeze on the top. It should be enough to keep the wind from moving water around. Good news for now.

Of course if there are open holes under a house with no banking and a lot of space between it and the ice, there could still be issues.

Checked my house on Waconia yesterday and it was a good thing I did. I had a whirlpool going down one of my holes that was enlarging quickly. I moved it to an area with no water water, blocked it and left it. Of course I did NOT drill any holes:)

Glad to hear the top froze this morning before the wind kicks up. I dont want to drill again until Thursday. All should be frozen and lake should have made more "good" ice by then.

Whats the best place to get on the lake with a wheelhouse? Was invited to come out that way, and having never been on the lake, wouldnt mind a few pointers... the Marina report is a great start, i see there is a little more structure on the north side, with the marina on the south. is it safe* to drive southside to the North? or is there North side access?

thanks -

SD
