FYI for curious minds

How is the ice and snow up there? Are resorts finally getting some roads plowed?

Lyback's latest (they are in Isle SE corner if unfamiliar with them)

January 9th, 2020

Today I am continuing pulling and setting up rentals for the weekend. The cold the last 24 hours really helped the slush situation on the ice in the first mile out. There still is 3-6 inches of hard snow on top but the slush below is pretty much froze. I’ve chosen to put our houses in those areas for the weekend. Most will range from 14′ to 20′ depths.

Renters will need ATV, snowmobile, or a compact SUV to get to rentals. Basically no vehicles over 4000lbs. If you don’t know your vehicles weight.. Google it. We will not be allowing any other vehicle traffic which means… no wheelhouses with ATV’s. no portable vehicles except side by sides, ATV’s and snowmobiles. After the weekend and we see more consistent temperatures we will be pulling more privates and establishing more roads we will re- assess and go from there.

I said this earlier and I will say this again. There are a lot of varying ice conditions around the lake, and every one in this business knows what is out in front of them and are doing their best out there for their customers. Some have better ice than others. Some have different limitations than others. This year has been one of the more difficult ones to deal with ice conditions for along time and we are not in the clear yet. Impatience will not make the ice freeze…

Keep a Tight Line!

Eddy

The two groups I chatted with told me one had a 1/2 ton pickup pulling his wheel house the other drove his sxs out pulling his portable, both drove all over the lake flat hoping catching walleyes on every stop.,not like the old days for ice thickness this time of year, heck one year by mid january I remember standing on the tailgate of my truck to pop a hole with a 2' extention on my lazer 40+inches of ice not this year, still spooky with varing ice condtions all over the lake..

Your nuts if your driving all over the lake with a half ton and wheel house. IMO. I fished last Friday and Saturday and found spots with max 8 inches. 3 of which were frozen slush. If you think your half ton will hold on that then I say go for it. I saw no trucks on the ice last weekend except ones parked on shore. I was on west side. Fished five different flats all the way out to the middle of lake. Was more ice on flats that closer to shore. Red door is not allowing trucks or house out this weekend and barnacles has not made that decision yet according to their Facebook. So not sure where your friends accessed from.

As far as I could see only within the last week or so have 1/2 tons been out to the flats.Fishing has not been “hot” I would say steady is the word.Perch are hard to come by. Tullibees and eyes more eager to bite 30 ish by day 20 or less at night..... stay away from crowds you’ll do fine

I was there this last weekend and will be next weekend as well. It was not "hot" for our group. I would lean more to steady I guess but slower. Didn't keep anything, but didn't aim to either, I'd say what we caught was mostly above 23 and below 28. Sort of what we expected. We also found very inconsistent ice depths out from the east side. I know from watching it begin and stop and begin freezing again throughout the course of firearm deer and muzzleload season that there is just not going to be great ice everywhere. Pretty much exactly what can be seen, a lot of cloudy ice also. Have not been up to the north end by like red door, but I know when the lake started to ice there was a lot of that shale ice building up there. My guess is it's pretty rough unless that stuff melted or moved out before the whole lake locked.
