waiting for open water now, I have my dad's transducer to try out.

Thank you to JT for mentioning Fish-lectronics in Columbia Heights. I was under the impression that they couldn't work on humminbird equipment at all, but apparently that only may be true if it's warranty work which this thing is way out of warranty. I actually called them early last week to chat about a si-tex/honda head unit I bought on ebay, and promptly shipped it to them, so I'll be anxious to see what magic they can work. If my dad's transducer doesn't solve my issue their shop will be the next choice. Thanks again!

For free. Lowrance 2530 and Zercom flashers. Heads only, no transducers. The ram mount is not included and has been removed. I live in Aitken.

Ok, so by your own calculations, you've owned this unit for 8-9 years. You bought it used, estimating it to be an additional 3-4 years old beyond when you bought it.

If you bought a used car, drove it for 8 years, and something broke, would you take it back to the dealer expecting them to repair it at their cost?

Let's have some reasonable expectations. If it were under warranty, and they wanted to charge you for fixing it, then I would agree, something is wrong. But, you've got 8+ years of enjoyment out of their product, now it needs some TLC to go the next 8+ years. I don't see the issue with HB charging for their time and materials to fix something.

Now, the flat fee portion, yea, I do have issues with that, but, look at it from their side. They don't know what you're sending to them, it could be as simple as replacing a chord, or as extensive as fixing the motherboard. Better to balk at the price upfront, than you send it in, and get a huge unexpected bill in the end.

It wasn't purchased used. I meant that the models were released by humminbird in 2008ish. I bought it new, but as with most things it's a little risky until they're established for awhile.

I don't have lofty expectations other than I think it's wrong to charge a flat fee that is 80% or more of the MSRP on a brand new one and at the time I was under the impression they were the only place that could work on them, warranty or not. Now I understand they are the only authorized WARRANTY shop, so I indeed have other options. I have looked at it from many angles, thank you for yours.

Well I got out fishing at my parents lake place this weekend and was able to try the unit out with mine and my dads transducers. As poor as we did fishing, at least I had success in narrowing down my issue. Indeed - it is the transducer. Checked, rechecked, and checked again and the same answer every time, so I am happy as a clam. Ordered a new one and that should be the end of it. I wish the rubber insulation on the cable was a little more stout, I think that's where my problem was. But now that I know, I'll try a little harder to keep sunfish from wrapping me up.
