You gotta stay on it too! Last spring I was out w/ a friend and we pulled for a few hours w/ a lot of people around us, we caught 1 smelt! The very next night my friend went out again, I stayed home, and he pulled in a cooler full! Figures! Oh well, I still got a 5 gallon bucket full from him.
Learned another lesson, I do not need 5 gallons of smelt!

Has anyone checked water temps near the bridge or airport as of yet? Just trying to figure out if timing still might be around the first weekend of May...

It might be sooner than that if it stays warm or we get some warm rain. I haven't checked the point but I found a river that was 38F yesterday

Here's a pic of the first smelt of the year. This was caught on a rap. We were trolling park point for coho. Its still a little to cold the surface temp on the point today was 35-36. Had no luck with the coho but this little smelt has me thinking it won't be long.

I was out in front of the Lester River fishing the last two days and noticed many Loons were out there feeding on smelt out in the lake 100-150 yards out. It wont be long, I give it a week or less and they should be running.

Welcome to LSF James. Try Marine General on London Road and 15th Ave. E. in Duluth. They carry a few nets I believe.

This afternoon I was talking to Conservation Officer Kipp Duncan at the Lester River and he told me they were getting a few smelt there last night.
