So we went to the airport tonight and the waves were rather large so we went back to the canal and pulled some smelt. Not as many as last night, but still pulled a decent bucket.

we went out Saturday night at the point. Those waves sucked! we had a smaller net which wasn't that great, we pulled for a couple of hours, and ended up with about 2 dozen, pretty bad, so we just gave them to the guys next to us. some big rollers out there, alot of them would break as soon as we would cradle the net at the end....

We tried our luck on Friday night at the Lester and the airport. We got five in the lake, none in the river. We were the only ones we talked to that got anything. Despite the steady rain, wind and huge waves, we had fun. Overall pretty slow.

Thanks for the reports, wonder if it is still too early. The dnr website says the temp is still too low.

One of the other threads on this forum is talking about smelt in Grand Rapids but doesn't really say where they are catching them. Will watch that tread to see if someone spills the beans.

Ok people here's the deal, straight from the horses mouth. This is the email I received from the DNR when I asked them about superior smelt as bait.

Regarding Lake Superior smelt:

See Page 19 of the Fishing regs booklet, 3 bullet from the bottom: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/fishing/fishing2008.pdf. Yes, you can use them this year. We have legislation that might change that next year.

Boardman I think the run is coming to an end. There were some guys going to try it tonight at the Stewart River though.
