We usually get one or two 3 1/2 year old bucks a year. We do a lot of scouting and hunt remote areas. We go the extra mile to find area's where there isnt much for hunters. And when we do see them we let them know we are there. Public hunting is good as long as you put in a little extra work.
Exactly... My 16 yr old brother was seeing roughly 10 deer a night on public land from a high up tree (pre-firearm season), a few came within 75yds but nothing he could get with his bow yet. We harvested 4 deer this year off of public land.

Public.
Mostly around Remer / Grand Rapids or McGregor area.
I have found you have to do the scouting ahead of time(which I cannot do). Folks who have hunted the same public areas for many years are consistent with some deer.
Those who spend little time scouting aren't seeing anything. Makes sense, you gotta put in the time.
My son did a survey for a school project. Kids in his school that firearm deer hunt were asked if they hunt private of public. It was surprising that almost all who hunted public rarely got or saw deer and those who hunted public took their pick of deer every year.
I would like to have the DNR publish the stats for public vs private land harvests. I don't think they will. Bad business decision.

There are over 3 million acres of land to hunt publicly in this state, if you can't kill a deer annually on public land you are simply not putting in enough effort or don't pay enough attention to your hunting techniques. We hunted public land over gun season and we shot 4, on 2 large pieces of pressured land. Just a little scouting pays HUGE dividends! When opening morning roles around, get there early, sneak to the back, and be ready for early morning/late evening action. I've been sitting on a chunk of public land near Northfield Mn thats hunted hard, but when I finally figured out what the deer were doing, I saw them almost every night making their evening venture.

I thought i heard somewhere before the season started that only 10-15% of deer hunters hunt public land it may have been a lower %
