Hey I know its a bit early (well for this year) but was wondering how the ice conditions are up there, or someone could notify me once ice is becoming walkable, thanks.

PikeHunter,

I've been in the woods a lot lately, and the small back-woods ponds are frozen, but aren't safe yet. Bigger waters like Bemidji are wide open for the most part. Exception is Red Lake, which has a nice skim, and should be walkable shortly....

Most of the smaller lakes in the area are now capped over. One of my coworkers said Irving froze over last night, but I can't personally confirm that. The lake in Bagley froze over on Thursday, the low last night was 8, and it's supposed to be even colder tonight. I'm probably going to give it a go on Saturday, chisel in one hand, ice picks around my neck of course.

Thanks for the responses and look forward to hearing reports in the future. Good luck on the early ice.

Walked on a local lake today, ice was a solid 3". I was muzzleloader hunting, so I didn't tinker too much out there, just checked the ice. Also, when I left the house at 6:30 this a.m. it was 2 degrees and Lake Bemidji was frozen over as far as I could see.

I have checked several lakes around the area, and the ice conditions REALLY vary! I have seen as much as 3.5 on some, but that only 100 yards off shore. Give it a few days, the main part of the lakes just froze over.

Just about all of Bemidji has ice on, except for the northern end near the state park. Was on my way out of town to do some grouse hunting and saw a guy with a portable out on a decent sized pond. Shouldn't be too long now.

There was a small group of houses on the south end today. One guy had a decent sized permanent out there and a quad. I'll probably be out there tomorrow now that I know its good to go.
