Wild Rice Lake or Fish Lake...hmm...

I'll be fishing with a buddy in the Duluth area this Sunday and need help deciding on whether to fish Rice Lake or Fish Lake.

I have had good crappie fishing on Fish Lake but the DNR data on Rice Lake shows better potential for big fish.

I may have heard of a freeze out on Rice a couple years ago...anything to that??? I def don't want to waste my time drowning minnows in a dead sea.

Any help is appreciated...here is a pic our trip to Fish Lake last year...yes the date on my cam is wrong!

WOW, looks like you had a heck of an outing on Fish last year, I'd probably steer you to going there as I haven't heard a peep regarding Rice, then again people are pretty tight lipped about Rice for some reason...hrmmm

I hope you have snowmobiles because most lakes around here are foobarred with deep slush pockets, the normal roads around Fish have been messed up badly most of the year for truck travel.

Yikes...no snomobile...I assumed the lakes up there would be okay for truck travel.

Might have to alter the game plan a bit.

Thanks for the info!

I called him. Sounds like the lake is in rough shape but 4-wheel drive should get you around okay if you stay inside other tracks and don't get stuck in the slush...

It will be an adventure anyways

I haven't been out to Rice for a few years now. If you choose Rice, be very cautious around the access. The access is located just above the dam. When the lake gets alot of snow the water gets flushed out a little faster and it has a tendancy to eat away the ice. And we've got snow up here. Every year someone gets wet.

Take skinny's advice. Last year a guy went through Rice near the damn. My fathers tow company pulled him out. He charged him 500 bucks. So use cautioun.

I'm a little behind with this report...but...

We hit Fish Lake on Sunday morning (1/31)
The lake was almost deserted and the road out was very rough and slushy...but we made it out to a promising looking area.

We sat down in 15 fow and within 10 minutes the Marcum was lit up in the 8-12 foot range. The crappies were not shy at all. They came through in large schools about every 5-10 minutes all day. We fished from about 7am till noon and caught nearly 50 fish in total, bringing home a limit each of good fish all 10-12 inches long.

Yes, they tasted delicious!
