I found an informative site you might want to check out...http://climate.umn.edu/doc/ice_out/ice_out_historical.htm

What's your best guess for ice out on Vermillion? Let's use Big Bay as the location!

I'll guess April 24th...

Hey Yo,

The average ice out date for Vermilion is April 27th. Most years it is within a week either way of that date. May 24th would be the latest date on record, so I think Big Jim may have had a typo there. It still looks like antarctica out my window so it won't be anytime soon for sure.

I'll go with April 30th, for no particular reason. It could be later, but I hope not....

Oooops!! I meant April 24th. I've broken ice on previous openers, hopefully not the end of May!

Here's hoping for a late ice out but before opener! Last time this occured in 2008 we had great fishing, but fish bit extremely light.

Hey Yo,

The iceout date has had little to do with how they bite on Vermilion for me over the years. You may have to adjust to catch them, however we always catch them. Vermilion is by far the best opening day lake I have ever fished, and brother I have fished them all over the years. I can't remember the last time our group failed to catch their limit on opening day.

Good point.

I have had no trouble catching fish, but the colder the water the less aggressive the fish from my experience.

I also think your chances for a true hog are much better with a late ice out and cold water on opener.

Welcome! We've had temps in upper 30's to low 40's for highs recently, but nite time still dropping below freezing. main lake areas still decent driving...however two weeks from now if these temps maintain as predicted it could get dicey around the narrows or anywhere current is involved! may want to arrange a backup plan - wheeler or sled...better safe than sorry!!Quote:
