I was just up at my buddys for a night of partying. The next day we decided to take a drive and see some of the sites that duluth has to offer. We also stopped and walked around on the lake. It looked to be about 6-9 inches of GOOD clear ice. Lots of people were out but the bite was slow after talking to a few. I have never fished the lake but it looks like it would be fun.

Yeah, that lake can be a real blast. I know of many anglers Who drive to the lake every day, just for a chance to wet the line. When it does freeze it can be awesome. But unfortunately the ice is usually a, here today, gone tommarow event. 6 to 9 inches you say. That must have been real close to town. We checked ice up in some of the more productive areas on Fri. We only found 1 1/2 - 2 inches. Not enough for me yet. Fingers crossed though.

Does anyone know how the bite has been? I heard of guys fishing the ice at the lester as well as 21st. Anything up by the french? I may head up the shore for the day tomorrow if I can find any up to date info.

Buddies fished saturday on both locations, only 1 mark on the graph on 21st, nothing seen/marked out lester's way. Hope we get some more cold and still days to get some more ice farther up the shore. Keep your fingers crossed

Just got off the big pond. What an experience. No fish but still was amazing. I was in 100-120fow. A guy set up not far from me had caught a 10lbs on the same set up I was using (bannana jig with smelt) Just walking on that ice was awesome though. It was so clear...you can see down a LONG way. Im going to do it again....Joe

Sounds like you have caught a a "Superior fever"?
Walking on the big pond is amazing! 60 ft looks like 3 ft, through 6 inches of ice! Totally amazing!! It is the closest feeling to walking on water one can feel.

Just be careful and keep an eye for rocks going by your hole! and travel light! If you get caught out on a flow? They let you take nothing with you including rods tackle boxes and fish houses augers etc.

That is definately a different experience out there. Too bad you didn't get to lay into one of those lakers. Maybe next time.

There is 3 portables out from 21st right now as I type this. Personally I'll wait until I can launch from Two Harbors!
