Where did they shoot it. I am originally from ND and use to go west to hunt mule deer all the time. They can get off track just like any animal. I know of one that was shot in SE ND a few years back. So it is always possible. Pictures would be great to see.

Someone shot one in the St. Charles area a few years back down in SEMN. Can't remember the guys name or what year, but I remember the picture in the paper and how the DNR said it was a "lost mule deer that wandered from ?"

Yes I've read and seen picture of mule deer in years past being shot in Minnesota. I know not to many years ago one was shot up in Ottertail county not far from out family farm. You would think that there would be more Mulies shot in western Minnesota.

A few years ago a guy that hunts the property I used to hunt north of Osakis, shot a small 5 point muley with his bow. His story and picture was in the local newspaper.

My grandfather, years ago, shot one in Ottertail County as well. So, I suppose they do wander east just like many of those western animals.

Makes me wonder about the legality of shooting one though. My granddad kept his pretty quiet.

I'm pretty sure that it's ok if you shoot one accidently. I would call the DNR though immediately after I found out I shot a muley, not a whitetail. In some cases it would incredibly hard to tell the difference. How can it be wrong if the dnr doesn't even recognize that there are mule deer living in the state? I've read about this somewhere, now it's bugging me and I have to look it up!

It's legal. I saw on another board years back where one was taken, and the DNR was contacted. It's a legal "deer".
