With the current ice conditions around the Bemidji area being very good I have been fishing the last few nights. Figured I would put up a quick report on the ice conditions and the fishing.

First, the ice is great up here. Other than a few spots that have slush on top the ice is very solid. All the lakes that I have been on have anywhere from 2-7 inches. The spots that have clear ice with no snow on top really have alot of ice for how early it is. BUT I have not been on any big water yet. Biggest lake we have been on is about 200 acres. But all of the smaller lakes are doing good IMO. We have about 10 inches of snow up here and really no snow on the lakes, maybe 1-3 inches on the lakes.

Second, the fishing has been okay. Cant really get to any of the spots we want to hit just to because the ice isn't quite thick enough in the deeper holes, Im sure there is plenty of ice but mine as well give it a few days. The fish have been very spooked from what I can see. But early ice fish usually are this time of year. But once all the drilling calms down the fish start to move and start to bite. I have been getting all my fish on a very small presentation, a number 12 Kodiak tipped with one of bobbos small white plastics. The crappies have been coming out high above the weeds and are feeding just as good as the gills. With the cold temps this weekend should be able to get to more of those more natural early ice crappie spots. All in all Should be a good few weeks of early ice to come.

Spenser
