Big-Nasty and I headed out on Superior for the weekend. We found some flat ice near the French and tried for some Loopers. The ice conditions were not great. Massive ice heaves made up the bulk of the ice, and the few flat spots we tried were loaded with sheets of ice below the surface.

When we did find ice we could pop holes through, the fish were there. Most were not interested in our offerings, but we did manage to catch 9 Loopers and some Whitefish. We kept a few Loopers for the grill. I also had a huge Chinook glide in and inhale and blow out my bug before I could set the hook. That would have been an interesting battle, considering the light tackle I was using! That was the first one I've seen.

I think a guy could catch all of the Whitefish you want. The best way to catch them was to simply drop a 1/32 oz. plain jig head tipped with a waxie right on the bottom. When I say " Right on the bottom" I mean " Right on the bottom". As I was hole hopping, I noticed the waxies I left on the bottom in previous, holes had disappeared. So when you set up. Drill 2 holes. Drop a waxie on the bottom, jig for Loopers with another line. The jigging attracts the Whitefish, and they will suck up the waxie off the bottom. I cought every one that came in doing this. The only problem is they smell so bad I didn't want to catch too many.

At noon on Sunday, we decided to try for some Lakers off the Lester. We only had a few hours to tempt a bite. We set up in 110 - 120 feet of water. I caught the only Coho for the two days almost instantly. 6 of them came in 40 feet down. I caught the smallest one on my Whitefish set-up. We both managed to hook a Laker on 3/4 oz. hand tied jigs tipped with a strip of Whitefish Belly. I lost mine, a 7 - 8 pounder, 10 feet below the hole after a 70 foot fight. Adam broke his off on the hookset. Only a few schools of Herring came through. And no biters. And for the Coho, we never saw one shallow. And only caught the one out deep?

All in all, the fishing was pretty slow, but a good time. The highlight of the trip for me was watching Big-Nasty run after his wind blown portable. The wind kept it tumbling just beyond him for a good 2 hundred yards. Something about a big guy running just makes me laugh. I'm glad he caught it. It was mine. Thanks for the good humor Nasty.

Great pictures, Whitefish those things are fun but they do reek pretty bad, I'm going to borrow your technique for for them and try it on ML perch. Thanks for the report Skinny.

BTW, I will pay $50.00 CASH for a good picture of Nasty chasing his portable across the lake

Trust me guys. If I had a picture of Nasty running down that portable, it would be on here. Unfortunately I was laughing too hard to snap a picture. Your lucky day Adam.

Alright.....Be Nice to the big man here! It may have been funny, but I did manage to get Skinny's popup back, twice!. See my truck is in the shop, and I had to get a ride back to Duluth for our classes and I didn't have room in my rides ride to bring my own fish house, so I was fishing out of Skinnys hunting blind with 4 stakes. So basically it was a kite when the wind got ahold of it! But I ran her down!

I wanna thank MNSteel for helping me land the larger looper I caught Sat. He came right in the window of the pop-up and helped me get the ice sheets out of the hole so we could land the fish! Good to fish with you again my friend!

I am going to add a couple pics here also. One is the sunrise from my pop-up blind, another is a whitefish cruising on the bottom in about 15 FOW. Just to show how clear the water can be.The last photo is my looper from yesterday morning.
