We just returned last evening from another highly anticipated trip to the great Lake Winnipeg. The home of the massive greenback walleyes. Somehow we got totally lucky and had the weather nailed for this trip. We couldn’t of asked for anything better as we were able to fish outside for the majority of two of three days. Like I mentioned in a earlier report one of our prime areas from the last couple years really got messed up at freeze up and was basically unfishable. This forced us to search out some new areas which was fun but time is limited on a three day trip. We found the fish to be a bit more scattered than years past, but we located a couple schools with some help from our good friend Canuck. The group of us really had to work to turn the fish, there are always a small percentage which will just come and hammer your bait, but as a whole it was a challenge. The two lures that shined for us again were the 2 ¾” lindy darter and the lindy rattlin flyer. Those two baits put our best fish on the ice even though there were plenty that didn’t go for them. We discussed that you are putting them down with the confidence that you are going to turn the right ones, but definitely not all of them. We worked depths from 7.5 to 17 fow, but 13-14 seemed to hold the most numbers. Lake conditions in general are pretty good with some scattered drifts and lots of scattered fractures during freeze up, you can navigate around most everything pretty, just have to pick the right spots once and a while. Wheelers are the best for travel, but a sled will be ok now that there is some snow on the lake. I just want to thank Jeremy, Kirk, Junior, Paulie, Jake, Jonny for a great trip. It was definitely a lot of fun and great memories were made. Jeremy and I were able to each land 28.5” master angler walleyes on this trip for the big fish honors. We also had a couple of heartbreakers that left a few of the guys wondering what could have been. There is also a pretty large northern pike swimming with a bluegill pattern lindy darter in it’s mouth. I wasn’t able to get his nose up the hole for jeremy, it had a big head from what I saw. Noonan!

I will add the rest of the pictures as I get them, but enjoy for now.

It was another great trip ! Hole hopping greenbacks in January are you kidding me??? On our trip 2 years ago it was -35 F with stiff winds, this year we had near 35 F with light winds, could not have asked for nicer weather.

One of my favorite parts of these trips is watching the "train" leave the landing and head to the lake each morning. Wheelers with portables in tow, there is no fooling around. I have included some pics of the "rigs" we were using.

Our first morning we had a beautiful moon setting in the west. I tried to capture it but with my digital slr at home the point and shoot didnt do quite as well.

As Retro said fishing was a little slower but we did manage some quality fish. I was privilaged enough to land Ret-ro's 5th Manitoba Master making him a Manitoba Walleye Specialist.Congrats Jeff !!!

It was a great time fishing with you Retro, JR, Kirk, Shakems, Johnny, and Paulie!

Here are some more pics...

Were there many others on the lake, or were more people hitting the river?

The masses are around Chalet beach and Balsam bay.
We only saw a couple other small groups and two trucks in three days.
