Ill be stopping out on Saturday morning as well, and I have never fished this lake before, but my hunting land is just 5 miles away so we wanted to give it a shot. If we dont feel comfortable driving on the ice can we park on the dirt road and walk onto the lake by the red barn or is it better to park in the launch area and then walk on from there?

You can get to good water either way. More parking at the launch and you can get to deeper water quicker if that is what you want. The red barn area is a good place to park as well. Drive on from there and keep to your right. There is a shallow bar there. When you start seeing old holes you know you are at the drop off to deeper water so stay on the shallow area. that shallow area does not keep going south all along the shoreline When you see the first dock you know it's deeper. All along that bar where it starts to drop off is good. However it also has a lot of traffic, especially on weekends. good luck.

Also if you plan to drive out, look out for those spear holes. Most holes are marked with some tree branches and are close to the shorelines. To be on the safe side, just follow the main vehicle tracks. Be safe and good luck.

Great point Sherman. Most of those spear shacks are found right off the boat landing to the right and off the Red Barn landing to the left and surrounding the shallow bar in the area where folks park there on the ice. good luck.

How's the ice going to be after all this rain and warm weather?

I was out this morning. Ice was still in good shape but a lot of slush on top. Caught 1 rainbow but the small perch were everywhere

The area around the red barn in that bay and surrounding area does hold those small perch. Other areas do not have as many. Keep your bait up a foot under the ice if the perch are around. Perch can also be found in deeper waters just off the bottom. Most are in the weedy areas like that bay on the north end. They can be a pain at times. When ice conditions are safe to drive with a truck then you can get to better spots. Trout are all over the lake. A wheeler is a good thing to use as well or snowmobile. anywhere around the lake in shallow waters you will find them. Be patient [tell myself that a lot] and no noise. Two good points to have. You will see less people as the hard water season goes forward and the trout will still be there and less noise the better. good luck.

Very tasty those smelt are!!!! Looks like February for me as well. My wife still can't get in the van with recovery from two knee operations so she is using the truck for work. The van is useless for hard water fishing. good luck.
