With the boat having a custom snap cover being built and then put into storage I was limited with options for fishing so I stuck close to home and decided to fish the river and see what was biting. I once used to fish the river religiously when I was young but as soon as I got my license at 16 and could pull the boat it has primarily been lakes for the many years since then. So, I decided to relive some old memories and head to the Mississippi. I fish a 1/2 ounce lindy no snag sinker with a 24" fluorocarbon leader tied to a snap swivel and a #2 green hook with a green bead and a red treble trailer hook with a medium sucker. The fishing was great Monday afternoon with the smallies hammering the bait as it would drift down the current break. As soon as the wind started blowing out of the North things really slowed. I managed 5 in the first 30 minutes and nothing over the next hour and a half. I called it a day and went back on Tuesday and managed 1 smallie. I moved about 7 miles down stream to a different location and ended up snagging a big carp and lost a nice walleye at the shore. The trailer hook did wonders and hooked half of the fish caught. Not lighting the world on fire but steady action and those river smallies certainly have some fight in them. The cold water and air temp didn't stop them from doing some acrobatics either. They aren't walleyes but will do in a pinch.
