That's been there awhile it looks like. Costly fishing trip, that never happened.

WOW I know it's been cold as an eskimo pie but come on people it is only DEC 12th for cryin out loud, that plus all the snow what makes somebody think that it is safe, you might find 12 plus inches but over under the drift 50 ft away it's only 5. ok rant complete!

I am really surprised that the ice is still so thin but I'm not really surprised to see so many vehicles going through after all the cold weather, I'm sure many are assuming the ice is good. If I wasn't such a chicken who knows maybe I would have attempted it. That just shows how little I know about the effects of snow and ice. I wouldn't think the snow is that good of an insulator but there seems to be plenty of evidence around the state indicating that snow IS a good insulator.
I wonder if all the snow is 100% responsible for the bad ice or if the cold came in too fast freezing the top cap before the entire lake was cooled to an ideal temp for supporting ice???

Assessed LAke Bemidji by sled today after seeing this nonsense. Thickest ice I found was just over 6.5". Not to say that there aren't thicker spots, but we checked in close to shore, where the ice should be thick, and it was identical to a spot over 24' of water. The 1.5" slush pocket on top of that ice makes it look like more, but I assure you, it's not enough... Lots of sagging and slush pockets. Saw several spots where ATV or sleds brave enough to run without looking got piled up with slush. One stretch about 100' long no longer has ANY snow on it, thanks to sagging enough to be completely slushed over.

Good news? There's no longer 21" of snow on the lake... ;)

Obviously this person didn't have a very good thought process! Has there been any other rigs out there besides for ATV's or sleds? Just because its been cold doesn't mean that it is safe enough for a 5000lb SUV, even though the north end typically is the first safe drive out spot.
