Well I ventured out Saturday morning for what I thought was going to be some fall walleye fishing on a McGregor area lake. After spending a couple hours pulling around a jig and minnow trying to get what appeared to be bottom dwelling walleyes to bite, I stumbled across a school of crappies. Even got the first one to bite on the 1/4oz jig/shiner combo I had on at the time. Having no luck with eyes, I decided to switch gears. I threw out the anchor and let the boat settle over 20-21 fow. This worked pretty well in the 15MPH winds. After switching up jigs and techniques with mixed results, I settled on a Forage Minnow tipped with a Fathead head. This was the ticket. With fairly aggressive jigging (1 to 4' of the bottom), they would hit it on the drop and next lift would be fish on! Water temp was in the mid 50's with 10-15mph wind out of the south.

Good report.
Good work on switching it up and turning a trip around.

Thanks Mark! That was the first limit of crappies I'd ever caught on open water. I've been so addicted to chasing walleyes and have been too stubborn to give up on them when they weren't cooperating. I learned a valuable lesson, 10 slabs in the frying pan is worth 2 in the bush. Or however that saying goes!

I have been finding the colder the water gets, the more they start to hug the bottom.
