The area lakes that I have checked have anywhere from 0"- 6" of ice on them. I have been scouting quite a few small, low-lying lakes and am still seeing 4"-5" of ice with varying quality. As most know, extreme caution should be used when checking lakes under these conditions. I wear a life jacket, ice pics, and I check thickness often with an ice chisel. My best advice here is this; don't travel to a lake and venture out unless you are willing to turn back when ice conditions are marginal.

So far, 3"-4" of snow has fallen and it is fairly wet and heavy, this does not help in the short-term but a few cold nights should negate the effects of this mess (I hope).

Scouting these small lakes is very interesting to me, as no two are really alike. Many are not worth returning to at all. Some are dominated by small Bluegills while others are over-run with small Crappies. Still others have just enough variation in size structure to warrant a return.

Today I checked a lake that I haven't been to in a couple of years. The Crappies were stacked up pretty thick, though they were mostly on the small side. I didn't have to venture too far, released many, and kept 3 for my dinner. All-in-all, it was worth the trip.

The Crappie lake I scouted yesterday was not far from Longville and was under 100 acres.

I checked two lakes today in Hubbard County but turned back on both as the ice was far less solid than a week ago, and had a pretty thick slush layer from the heavy snow.

Many lakes earlier in the week had big drain holes opening up, those lakes will need some time to set back up before I go back out on them. I have a few lakes with bigger Crappies and Bluegills that I can't get out on safely quite yet and it's driving me crazy, no need to get killed for fish.

Thanks for reporting your explorations. I think we are all getting pretty antsy, but you are correct, it's not worth getting in bad spot. I am thinking 12/26 will be my first opportunity this year to hit the ice.

Yes, I think we are all getting very antsy. A year ago we had been ice fishing Mille Lacs for almost a month by now. This year it looks like it could be another month before we can get out there (with the big houses) a least. I was all set to go out over Christmas break but it seems now I will just be looking at open water.
