What a way to break the ice, I spent 7 hours on the ice today with only 3 flags,Tuff enuff was fishing fishing with me for a couple hours but had to go home around noon. The first flag I had a pike on and seen him under the ice but lost it,only about 5 lbs. Second flag was a big fish but somehow busted me off above my leader, I'm thinking she took it deep and when I went to pull her in took one head shake and snapped my line. Third flag was my money flag, she just about spooled me before I set the hook and the fight was on. After a ten minute battle I had landed a 45 1/4'' hog, not a bad first fish of the year! This size fish is not uncommon for early ice but to start off with one this big is just amazing! I was fishing the first break using tip ups and smelt about a foot off the bottom. The ice is still a little scary with only 3 inches of ice at the breakline, but like before it is fishable, just BE CAREFUL if you do come up, I'm guessing thursday should be the day when the ice will be perfect and you wont have the feeling of uneasyness.Either way a heck of a way to start the season and I'm excited to see what this winter has in store! Remember I was by myself so I did the best with the pic.

Wouldn't ya know it! I'm only a mile down the road and Tyler ices a 45 incher!! Am I "Black Cloud" or what? Never-the-less, it was a nice day to take a "Sunday Drive" and visit my good friends in Waskish.

The fish weren't biting so I fished a half-day and went home, totally satisfied. It was the "Maiden Voyage" for the yet another new ice season.

Thin ice kept us from moving around as much as we would of liked. The rough, jagged ice, that went for about 200 yards, was hard to walk on but solid and in shallow water. After that, clear, new, slippery ice had formed and it wasn't all that thick. Make sure to bring your ice cleats when you head north.

I would have to think that by next weekend the ice will be perfect for getting out a decent ways for walleye and pike. As for right now, it's really not good and I wouldn't advise anyone to go up there in the next day or two.

Here are some photos to show what transpired on my first Red Lake outing. Notice in the one pic just how far out we were from the Tamarac Bridge. All-in-all, it was another good time with the Bear Paw Boys. Thanks guys. I will probably see you next weekend.

Nice job on the pike Tyler! Looks like the pike on URL are doing well!

Greg, too bad you didn't have any luck. You are still doing better than most of us, in the fact you ha
ve got out on the ice. I see you were trying to use the "snow" to your advantage. That is my plan when I can get out as well.

Again, great report and pics guys!
