Charging batter with generator

I just bought a champion inverter. I noticed it has a 12 volt battery charging option. It's a standard plug with alligator clips on other end. Is this a good way to charge a 12 volt battery? How long will it take to charge a dead battery and will it keep charging the battery once full? Just curious if a battery
Charger plugged in to gen would be a better safer option than using the plug feature?

The 12v outlet is non regulated. It will charge a battery, but will also overcharge a battery.

Buy a small charger and just run it off the 120volt circuit.
