I am going to be in Minneapolis coming this Sunday for 2 weeks for work and bringing gear except auger. Looking for evening locations. I have bank fished around White Bear and Tonka areas but this will be my first time icing Minnesota. I have an addiction that needs fed. My wife considers herself an ice fishing widow. I've already been out here in Colorado 20 times since early November hiking into mountain lakes for macs, brookies and tiger trout. Low land lakes have been sketchy but been out for dink perch to stock up the freezer for laker bait. I have no problem getting out and fishing into the dark by myself but wouldn't mind going out with some friendly folks. I will be bringing my tackle, vex, and rods from UL to XXH and am game for hunting down anything that swims.
Any responses would be appreciated. Not looking for hot spots. Just fishing.
Decided to hit fish lake instead. Found a nice contour from 30 FOW up to shallow and immediately got into sunnies and crappie. Had a dead stick out and picked up about a 30" Northern. Spent about 3 hours out there and picked up 5 crappie and 3 sunnies. The crappie came in singles and were scattered throughout the water column from the bottom at 30 FOW up to 15 fow. They seemed to like a pretty aggressive jigging with some custom flutter spoons I brought from Colorado. Was a great evening harvesting dinner.
I'm glad you had some fun and fish dinner. So, how's the ice fishing here compared to CO where you're from? I'm a hole hopper guy so movement is the key if you're looking for them crappie. Have fun at it while you're still here.
FYI the winter trout opener is this wknd also if you're interested. You'll need a trout stamp for fishing/taking trout. Check the MN Fishing Regulations booklet for more info. Or you can search this site for more tips n info. I might be up north at Grindstone Lake this wknd but not sure yet.
