Booner and I made the all night drive up Manitoba last Thursday night. We fished three days off the east side with sleds. Canuck joined us for parts of two days. Observations were the top 6-8 inches of ice are really dirty, the water is dirtier than normal, there is a large area of broken ice along the south shore starting around pruden creek and extending west a few miles. In that area the water was even dirtier. There is lots of flow from the Red and the Brokenhead. Guys were running out of Pruden, but we did not this trip so I can't give the conditions. Lots of people driving on with trucks at Balsam harbor. It sounded like people were driving on at Ralph Rd on the west side this weekend also. We hit one of our spots on the east side the first morning and after landing a handful of 16" class fish Canuck set the hook on a beautiful 29.5" greenback. We left him late morning to explore to the west because he had an appointment in the afternoon. After discovering the dirty water and broken ice to the west we focused on the balsam area the next two days. We caught fish in 13-14 feet, but our best areas were in 18-20 feet the last two days. Firetiger rattle baits and some rattle spoons were the best by far, with only a few fish coming on natural colors. It seemed like the bigger the lure the better possibly due to the dirty water. A second line with a jig or small spoon sitting still or with only small movements did pretty well at times also after calling fish in. We caught a lot of fish, but maxed out at 26" the rest of the trip. 75% of the fish were right on bottom, but a 1/4 of them were suspended and often chasing hard from about half way to 5-6 feet under the ice. We had three days of light winds, temps from 33-37 degrees with some drizzle, but almost no sun. It was great to get out fishing with Canuck again also. Til next time Big Windy!

Souinds like a perfect trip, warm temps, low light and some dandy fish.Curious what the daily limit is? also is there a slot? I have no intentions of going there just curious,I've read the local folks have concerns about over harvesting and much longer the big walleyes can sustain the pressure.

Now that is a good and right on report. I only had a couple part days with these guys but enjoyed every minute of it.
Things have changed for travel on the lake since last week. All the snow/slush froze and little to no snow for sliders for sleds. Tracks, quads and trucks were the best yesterday. Monday it is supposed to snow so I will be back to my sled.
Took a friend out yesterday who had not ice fished lake winnipeg before and would believe his first fish almost immediately was a fat 28 1/2" greenback.
