Made a quick run to Lake Winnipeg this weekend with my brother and fished Friday and Saturday when Canuck joined us. We stayed up at the Sandbar Motor Inn in Grand Marais. They have a small motel with good rooms, open parking lot and have pretty good bar and grill. We launched out of balsam both days and took a wheeler and a sled with scratchers. There was about an inch of fluffy snow out on the lake aside from the hard snow drifts. We ended up bouncing around quite a bit in mostly 17-22 feet. Caught some fish here and there and were able to land two masters at 28" & 29.5" near some small ridges. Those two both came on rattle spoons with orange. We fished all the way over to west of the mouth and never found any real clean water. Out deeper at the mouth the water had the lightest stain and the best clarity. The ice was rumbling on Saturday and the crack out of balsam really pushed, but was still crossable. They have thunderstorms coming today and snow and big wind tomorrow and then a big cool down. I expect the ridges to be moving. If you are going up I would suggest having some ramps or boards just in case. Good luck to those heading up. I will be watching till our group heads up on the 16th.
