Catfish reel opinions???

Alright I'm done buying cheap reels and I want some opinions on what reels to look at. The bad thing is I should have posted this sooner because I'm going to grand forks Saturday. I'm between the 6500c and the Shimano Corvallis. So any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and maybe some other reels I'm not thinking of. Thank you in advance for the help.

I have used Abu Garcias forever and have never I mean never had a problem. I have many of them that I use for Northerns ( bobber fishing and casting) and 7000 for Sturgeon and Winnipeg catfishing. My vote is for Abu Garcias................Kirk

I picked up a 5600 and 6600 Abu C4s this year and haven't been very impressed. Very stiff, the push button release is stiff, doesn't reel very smooth at all, and I am constantly having to tighten up parts. These issues are consistent with both reels. Expected more for the price I paid.

I have on older model of the Shimano Corvalus (its called something different) and I love it. Very smooth casting and reeling and I think it was pretty cheap ($50ish new). My buddy has a pair of this new model Corvalus and I like them a lot too.

I have had good luck with my Abu Revo Toro S, on my Muskie set up, so I'm not anti Abu, but for catfish I'll give the nod to Shimano, based on my experience.

Ambassador 7000's bullet proof for me. and a Okuma bait feeder spinning reel, a big one, very good reel, complete with a clicker, you usually do not get this on a spinning reel.

Brad makes a good point, the Swedish made Abu/Garcia, Ambassadeur reels only. I have a collection of 6000's and consider them to be just fine for cats around the Fargo-Moorhead area.

But once we head north to Lockport for the big fish, I do find that I am under powered. The 6500 and 7000 class reels have better gearing for the 20-30lb fish. The fighting handle is a nice upgrade too if it does not come with it.

Another option to consider is to look for used reels on eBay. My preference for sturgeon gear(which will cover any catfish anywhere) is older Penn reels. I just picked up a pair of used Penn 310GTI reels in great condition for $75 shipped. They are smooth and very dependable.

Yea I've thought about eBay but for these ones I will go new and I also fish sturgeon so it will be 6500 or bigger just for the fact of I multi specie fish with my cat rods.

Well I went with the 6500c because I will use it for musky and I didn't want a power handle for all the casting that is involved. Now I just need to hit the red and test it out. Thanks for all the first hand input on this.
