I am looking at buying some new electronics for under $300.00. Looking for advice on what your suggestions are and why.

I don't fish a lot and don't consider myself a very good fisherman at this point. I am looking for something that will easily show where fish are and at what depth and also provide the waypoint option.

Any suggestions and reasons why would be appreciated.

Thanks.

helix 5 sonar/gps is a great option, they released a new free basemap download a week or so ago too, its better than what was available before but not as much detail as a $125 chip

Yup helix 5, you can also buy the ice ducer for around 80 bucks and mount it on something portable and you got a nice flasher for winter

I am in the same situation as pwally and have never owned a boat let alone electronics (besides fl-8). What kind of battery would be needed to run a unit like the helix 5 sonar/gps?

a standard 7a or 9a 12volt

I would also make sure to get the Gen2 helix 5, there are a few gen1's out there for near the same price
