Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe sues county over policing dispute
Talks have deadlocked and Dayton's attempt to intervene failed.

In the lawsuit Friday, the band asked a judge to declare that tribal officers can investigate violations of federal, state and tribal law on the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation and prohibit the county from interfering. Also named in the lawsuit are County Attorney Joe Walsh and Sheriff Brent Lindgren.

The county's decision to revoke our law enforcement agreement has tied the hands of our tribal police officers at a time when the opioid epidemic has been ravaging our communities," Chief Executive Melaine Benjamin stated during the meeting, according to a news release from the band. "In 2015, we had seven overdoses. Since the county revoked the agreement in July 2016, we have had 66 overdoses on the Mille Lacs Reservation, 13 of them fatal.

Maybe this is the begining for the tribe to be completely soverign?
Pay taxes, build they're own jail for starters,I've read that mille lacs county has the highest crime rate in the state (rez),seems the tribe can't tend to they're own back yard as usual.

"Tribal police are funded by the band and were designated as peace officers in a 1991 state statute. But without an agreement with the county, tribal police can't be dispatched, take someone to the county jail, work investigations or seek charges from Walsh. The band says they have the authority under federal law."

Hopefully the Judge throws this one out on its ear.

If the band wants its Sovereignty, then it is the Bands responsibility to Arrest, Detain, Prosecute, and House those criminals on the Reservation.

They do not pay taxes from those Billion Dollar Tribal Casinos, and the Minnesota Tax Payer should not be on the hook for the Tribal Criminal Element.

Not sure what to believe with this, a couple months ago I read they wanted the sherrif to do less, sit idle and only act as "backup" in most of the drug cases where a warrant was going to be served because this is a cultural thing.... at that time governor goofy was going to send them to arbitration to settle the differences.

Mille Lacs County has exorbitant taxes because of the cost to the county for the services they provide to the tribe. So in the end the residents of the county foot the bill for much of these services. It is really sad.

This is the dispute: The Band claims the sovereign reservation boundaries include Isle, Waukon, Onamia (The entire south end of Mille Lacs Lake) (see diagram) and Mille Lacs County says the reservation is only on the southeast corner where the casino is.
Here's a letter from Harry Humbert, Federal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Safety, Resource Protection and Emergency Services

Let's just put up a wall and end the bickering. We can put up crossing stations just like on the Canadian and Mexican boarders and let the Indians live the way they want too without any help from the US taxpayers.
