my two cents I was up to the big pond a few months ago and caught some walleyes of all year classes. Big eyes to small eyes could not keep any but we could fish for them. I decided to write the DNR a nice letter asking how it make sense that we pay for licenses and keep none while the tribe gets to keep all the walleyes they catch and discard all of the fish that are not "walleye". When I first starting seeing the pictures of the carnage it was gut wrenching (all species of fish discarded). I also noticed that there has been a effort by the state to promote the small mouth fishing to seemingly replace the walleye. The State official gave me a nice dissertation on how the Mille Lacs system works in regard to evasive species and the lake. I kind of chuckle about hearing how walleyes and small mouth don't do well together for many reasons. I also drove around the lake one afternoon and saw first hand how the smaller resorts are struggling - sad. I noticed that the casino owned resorts looked amazing and all of the bass tournaments were ran out of the casino (big money). I guess what I'm trying to say is the worst is not over and I wish we could all come to a agreement. If the band wants t buy all of the resorts, pay the resort owners a good price, I'm sure most will take it. Then build some incredible resorts that will attract patrons back to the area. As a Sportsman in this state it is truly mind bending what has happened to the amazing body of water. I listen to Steve Johnson from Portside, He is truly the most vocal about the issues - good. Tony Roach and Brad Hawthorne have been outspoken about the situation. Not to beat a dead horse but, I do not see any progress on the lake. WHY????? I learned in my twenty years of military service to try to give solutions instead of just complaining. If the DNR/tribe would just come out with a workable plan we could move forward. Peoples lively hood is at risk - stop playing this game and make some decisions. Where are our elected officials? I hope this is not a 10 year plan.

I'm glad the sheriff is standing up to them. The amount of calls that Mille Lacs county answers up there is ridiculous. Reimburse the county or handle things yourselves.

Why anybody would take the county’s side in this is ridiculous. The tribe wants to have its tribal officers investigate state and federal crimes on the reservation. It would would ease the pressure off the sheriff. The canceling of the original agreement is purely a political power play by the county that helps nobody.

Of course the tribe wants to do its' own investigations so they can let their members off with a slap on the hand or nothing at all. The members then get off with little or no punishment to go commit more crimes within the County, putting more pressure on the County cops.
That's why people are siding with the County on this.

People are siding with the county because we don't understand this sovereign nation thing. I think of sovereign nation as "Canada, Mexico, Soviet Union". You make and enforce your own laws. Feed your own people, have your own medical facilities, institute your own tax system ect, ect. Also a passport is required to travel between the countries.

These sovereign nations seem to want to operate differently then the rest of the world. I don't care what they do there, just operate as a sovereign nation as I understand them if you do. If you would rather operate under the rules and protections and all the benefits the United States has to offer thats cool also.

The Mille Lacs Band has been trying to reacquire it's reservation since Art Gahbow was chief. This was one of Gahbow's goals as Band Chairman from as far back as 1972 when he took office. He had a vision to see his people's treaty rights restored and in 1999 his efforts and those of the other tribal leaders spurred the US Supreme Court to rule in a split decision that the United States government must honor it's treaty with the Chippewa.
This decision recognized this as boundaries for the current reservation: (scroll own to the Mille Lacs Band)
Land tenure
Since this decision encompasses the entire south end of Mille Lacs and three municipalities, jurisdiction of the area has been an area of dispute between the MLB and state, county and municipal laws.
Basically, a nightmare of legal issues that have no precedence.
The state and county of Mille Lacs have been fighting the Tribe since the decision, stating that it was unclear whether the tribe could police this reservation fairly with nearly a quarter million non-natives
Mille Lacs County filed a lawsuit to overturn the decision and lost in court.
Now, they have been ordered by the Secretary of the Interior to relinquish jurisdiction to the MLB tribal government.

So, what happens to the nearly quarter million non-natives that own property and businesses on the lake?

It's in the Tribe's hands, along with the future of the greatest inland walleye fishery in the United States.

I've been saying this for years. If the tribes want to live by their own rules and regulations, great but do it on your own dime without the benefits of being a US citizen. If you want the benefits of being a US citizen, then you live under the rules and regulations all US citizens must live by.
