I have to say that JR's on Red has made the right move to close there access down until ice conditions improve up there , he definitely has the safety of the public in his thoughts , great move JR ! The Beltrami county sheriffs office has issued a unsafe ice WARNING for Upper Red Lake , and is saying that the ice at this time is unsafe .There has been so much wind and warm temps of late , with more warm weather forecasted for at least the next four or five days to blame for this , and there is a lot of open water , cracks , piled up ice , broken up ice that's refrozen, and floating ice . It's hard to believe that other access points/resorts have not followed suit and closed there accesses given all the bad ice , drownings , rescues , down wheelers , and now the sheriffs warning . This Red Lake fiasco gets worse every year with pushing the boundaries all to make a buck . I was there on Wednesday and saw first hand the deteriorating ice conditions , saw a rescue of stranded fishermen due to a crack that opened up from the change of wind direction that day . Sure hope others wise up and follow JR's lead .

agree with Bandersnatch. No fish is worth dying for but some areas of the lake are better than others. The South end has had issues with that crack opening up all year.Good they closed it now.If you are going out be cautious, listen to the resort owners and live to fish another day.

If you haven't been to all the other resorts you're speaking of, it's not fair to take a universal jab at all of them, especially considering there have been tragedies up there already this season. If you have and you know of obvious endangerment of life at a specific place, please say so.

Hey there Whacker . When a lake the size of Upper Red has been subject to the amounts of warm days in the past couple weeks and with more to come , , , and has as much open water as of today that this lake does , has as much broken up ice , has been subject to almost three full days this past week of brutal winds out of a different direction each day, and the Beltrami sheriff departments issuance of a unsafe ice warning for all of Upper Red , and the chance of skim ice forming when cold does arrive and the chance of a small amount of fresh snow to fall and cover that newly formed ice ,well let's just say that being on this ice , by anybody , any where , at anytime ,is not a safe place to be ,so yes , that in itself is a endangerment of ones life for anyone who is on the ice . Allowing people to go onto unsafe ice should never happen any where , anytime . . . Actually anybody who steps foot onto the ice of a frozen lake or river is a potential accident waiting to happen even when ice conditions are safer than the existing ice on Red as of today .The unfortunate drownings last weekend were a terrible, terrible , terrible , and very , very ,very sad happenings to two people who unfortunately found themselves , somehow on some very thin ice .. one would think that a tragedy of this nature would have people saying enough is enough , and let's wait to allow people the access on this ice until it is deemed safe to be on it .... if one wants to take this debate even farther , at this point , I believe that Beltrami county or the DNR, should have taken the issuance of a unsafe ice warning one step further and closed the state portion of the lake down on a emergency basis for all travel of any sorts until current conditions change for the better . There are too many people that are inexperienced to be on poor ice conditions , and unexpectedly may find themselves in a bad situation on this poor ice . I hope and pray that another tragedy doesn't fall on the hands of somebody who hasn't said ,enough is enough ! Think about it !!
