With looking at Royaldutchmans post for the last two years the river is 12 miles east of last year on March 18th. A lot of ice on the river but hopefully it will warm and the river opens gradually...........Kirk

Seems like a dumb idea, but since all the big girls swim up they rainy to spawn ice fishing in-front of the public landing by the mouth this time of year might not be a bad idea?

This is certainly a go at your own risk thing. It's incredible how quick the gap loses ice when the river flow starts coming through. Proceed with great caution of those are your plans. Always take recommendation from the area resorts. They live there and work that ice. If they say no, take that warning seriously.

a few years ago the fishing was dead on the river so we went out of morris point for some tipup action, they were only letting out ATV's/sleds and we wanted to get close to the gap so we were heading east, got setup about 1/2 mile away and one of the guys from morris came racing out telling us to get away and come back towards the resort or leave, there was 30"+ of ice but they just didnt want us that close due to the ice starting to deteriorate

Rainy River update as of 2 pm today. River has busted open through the Manitou rapids. It's open within a couple miles of Birchdale. Birchdale itself is still completely locked up.

Picture looks like it's from the Manitou Rapids site, looking west (downstream).
