Just looking for some tips on sturgeon fishing the rainy river. Heading up April 13, 14, 15th. You think ice will be gone by then? Was thinking about going out of birchdale but would it be better to go more towards the lake and gap? Gonna mostly sturgeon fish and maybe try for some walleyes but mostly sturgeon. I have only been up their once before and that was with someone experienced so any help is appreciated!

Yes it will be open if ot all the way to the lake or a long ways. For first time sturgeon lane out in 4 mile bay will be busy but better fishing for action. Find a deeper hole and move up to the front of it and make sure you are anchored up good cause there is a lot of boat traffic and large wakes that will let some boats loose. We had about 20 fish in the boat last year with the biggest going 65" average was around 45"

One never knows about the weather and the ice conditions but usually ice is out to four mile bay by than but this might be a late ice out year. The crowds really hit 4 mile bay so I go the other way and fish the river more. Either way you just have to trust the eyes and reports that come from that area and hope the fish cooperate when you get there..................Kirk
