I have a good feeling that there will be open water this opener. Lots of 60's in the forecast. The sun should chew through the ice pretty quick. I'm trying to be optimistic here!

Yeah it's turned around quite nicely, I'm smoking a turkey breast in shorts and sandals drinking a cold beer on my patio for the first time this year!

Some wind/rain would really help up north though. A lot of ice out there still. But it's definitely looking more promising than last week!

I am really hoping the ice is gone by the 17th, and will be following updates here frequently, so lets keep each other up to date.

I was on Leech yesterday and I could barely get through the ice without an extension. So I don't think much ice has melted yet unfortunately.

Well this warm and wind is moving things along fast, small city lake here that the creek flows through (lake hiawatha for those more familiar) is almost all open now. It's always one of the first to open, combo of the city street drainage (gross) and the creek flowing in, but it's a move in the right direction. Suppose to be real warm again this weekend.

Looking into walleye opening dates for northeast minnesota on our dnr website I came across this memo from the dnr...Ironic eh?

"Why closures are necessary
Seasonal closures help protect fish when they are concentrated in areas during their spawning season. The number of spawning area closures is highest on years when winter persists longer than normal."

Apparently this doesn't hold true on lakes in central minnesota.

Most lakes in central MN have very little successful spawning going on. Stock, catch and take is the game. Up in the north east where lakes have been protected and shore lines in tact there is still natural spawning.

I'm talking walleyes specifically.

If anything this wind, rain and heat today will really help. Hope the ice doesn't shift too much like on Mille Lacs a few years back when it knocked houses off their foundations...
