I ran up to Bemidji on Sunday morning and it was weird as I headed north and met all the trucks pulling wheelhouses heading south. I booked two nights in Matt Breuer's Northcountry Guide Service fish house.

After Matt escorted me out to the house on his sled, I climbed on the sled with him and we headed to a tulibee spot. I jigged for a few minutes and I had my first tulibee on the ice! And I mean first! First time I ever caught one of those buggers - they put up a good fight! Dootleye (Tim) also came out and joined us in the hunt for the white fish. Matt proceeded to have the hot hand and caught 5 more while missing a few. Then I caught my 2nd one just before we packed up to head back to the house.

Back at the house, we were marking fish right away but they were pretty tight-lipped. We managed a couple small walleyes and a couple nice perch.

On Monday, we headed out to a different lake in search of bluegills and crappies. We were not looking for numbers, but were looking for bulls and slabzillas. We also met-up with one of Matt's friends and proceeded to hole-hop for about 4 hours. We were marking schools of fish, most of which were small suspended perch, which we did catch once in awhile and release. We managed 3 keeper crappies (one each), one which went just over 12" and one that went over 13", but they were nice and thick, too. Matt noted that when the wind had switched from the S to the SW that the bite had gone from slow to absolutely nil.

Back in the fish house on Monday night, I managed to catch a nice 15" walleye and a couple nice perch. Tuesday morning brought a couple more nice perch and a small eater walleye.

The rattle wheels did not go off a single time either night. The 'eyes and perch did not want to bite on a jig w/ minnow head, either. Only one perch took a minnow head. Everything else was caught on a dropper spoon with live minnow.

By the time I left at noon on Tuesday, it was snowing pretty good on Lake Bemidji. Maybe it was the weather system that was coming in that changed the bite. I still managed to take some good fish home.

Guess what I had for lunch after I got done cleaning fish this morning?

Thanks to Matt Breuer and Northcountry Guide Service for all he does to provide a great fishing experience for clients!

I didn't realize wind direction affected fish 'under' the ice as well as open water.

Thanks for hanging out, Chris! Had fun, and appreciate you coming up!

Bummed we (I) lost like 8 other tullies. ;)

fridron, when we arrived we caught a nice 'gill and about 15 crappies, when the wind switched and picked up, it went absolutely dead. Wind changes are related to changes in weather, so it makes sense I suppose... Odd, isn't it?

Yeah, my wife bought me that wine for Christmas. She said it was supposed to be a good one. But, I didn't like it that much.

I guess I missed some fish on my report. Matt and his friend caught more fish than I saw, I guess. I forgot that there was a bluegill caught, too.

I don't like to admit those little baby crappies were even caught! 4 keeper fish out of 15 or so isn't exactly good ratio...

Bring those tullies in for a smoking yet? Can't wait to hear what you think of them...

I'd be ready to catch more tulibees any day. Those things are a snap to clean! Will bring them in to get smoked and I'm sure I will love it!
