Tying on a Lindy Darter paid off in spades for Daniel Rudolph. The Elk River, Minnesota, angler caught a 1.84-pound tullibee in the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Saturday, January 23. The catch landed him in 20th place and won him a brand-new Suzuki KingQuad 400 ATV, plus the $3,000 Darter Bounty offered by Lindy Legendary Fishing Tackle if the 20th-heaviest fish was taken on one its amazing new rattling hardbaits.

“Darters have been catching walleyes, jumbo perch, pike and panfish everywhere since first ice, but the fact Mr. Rudolph caught a tullibee on one during the Jaycees’ event proves their universal appeal to all fish looking for a meal,” says Lindy’s Jon Thelen, a longtime fishing guide who helped develop of the new bait. Available in three sizes and a rainbow of glow and forage-imitating baitfish finishes, Darters feature a unique darting action.

Early estimates indicate that over 11,000 anglers were on Gull Lake’s Hole in the Day Bay north of Brainerd for the annual fundraising contest, which is hosted by the Brainerd Jaycees. A total of 843 fish were registered; the largest was a 6.26-pound walleye caught by Curtis Yess of Waseca, Minnesota. He caught the fish in 61 feet of water on a glow hook and a shiner minnow, and took home a new GMC truck for his efforts.

The 20-year-old event is the world’s largest charitable ice fishing tournament. All proceeds are donated to area 501c3 organizations, with the largest beneficiary being Confidence Learning Center—a facility for people with developmental disabilities. Lindy National Sales Manager Ron Kiffmeyer, of Brainerd, has been involved in the contest since day one, and Lindy remains a proud sponsor of the event. In addition to the $3,000 Darter Bounty, 15 other lucky anglers won $250 Lindy shopping spree for placing in the top 150. Complete event information can be found online at www.icefishing.org.
