International Falls Rainy Lake walleyes have been very active. Anglers are doing well in 35-40 feet of water when using minnows. Some of the areas mentioned are the reefs east of Dryweed Island and the groups of islands between Crystal Beach and Grindstone Island. Smallmouth bass have been aggressive, and are active from the rocky shorelines around Dove and Cranberry bays. Crappies are biting in 10-14 feet of water in Black Bay. On the Rainy River, walleyes are concentrating in the area between the Shorewood Drive Landing and the golf course. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org |

International Falls Rainy Lake walleyes are currently holding above the submerged reefs. For the most fish, use electronics to check 35-40 feet of water – when you mark fish, drop a jig tipped with a leech or crawler and work the reef slowly. Anglers are taking a few large northern pike from the reefs as well. There are several good reefs between Dryweed Island and the Brule Narrows, and also from the Brule to Kempton Channel. Smallmouth bass have been fairly active along the shoreline and islands from Black Bay east and into Lost Bay. Crappie action is best in Black Bay, especially up the Rat Root River on the west end of the bay. Rainy River levels are fluctuating with the recent rainfall, and you may have to experiment a bit to find the right depth. Walleyes have been fairly active below the Ranier Rapids and downstream a ways. Smallmouth bass are active in the stretch below the dam. Sturgeon are being caught near the rapids at Birchdale. International Falls Rainy Lake anglers are finding walleyes in 30-40 feet of water on the most submerged reefs. Reefs on either side of the Brule Narrows have been producing and the preferred presentation has been a jig head tipped with a leech or crawler. Walleyes are also being taken near the windblown points in depths of roughly 20 feet. Sand Bay offers a good walleye bite as well. Crappies continue to hit in Black Bay, and northern pike can still be found in the rocky and weedy edges of the bays. Some northern pike, however, are showing up on the reefs where anglers are fishing for walleyes. For walleyes and smallmouth bass, fish above the dam at International Falls, and below the Ranier Rapids. The area below the dam, as well as several miles downstream have also been good for these species. In the Rainy River, shiner minnows seem to be the key to success. Sturgeon fishing has been good near the mouth of the Littlefork River and below the Manitou Rapids. Before venturing out for sturgeon, please consult the current fishing regulations guide. Cook/Tower – Lake Vermilion With lake temperatures continue in the mid 60s, walleyes are biting on a Lindy rig and crawler on windswept weed lines. Perch fry are hiding in the weeds and the walleyes are on the prowl. Crank baits are also working well–best is trolling on cloudy, windy days or low-light conditions. The reef bite is OK using slip bobbers and leeches in the evening. Some very large muskies are basking in the cabbage or rocks, and some are being caught, but they are not aggressive. Deep weeds, smaller baits or fishing at night improves your odds. Bass are quite active taking soft plastics, top water baits and small spinners in traditional summer haunts.
