This is just an observation I made about the defense this season. Early on, Zimmer wasn’t calling safe games. He dialed up a lot of pressure before Griffen got injured which aided in Griffen getting a bunch of sacks early as the opposing limemen were being disrupted. Zimmer is know for bringing “exotic” double A gap pressures. As the season wore on, after Griffen’s injury, he did a lot less of that, and fortunately our secondary compensated by really being very stingy. I really thought he was anticipating playoffs and trying to keep his schemes and different exotic looks off tape. But, the fact that he never fired up the pressure in either playoff game makes me think he got really conservative (especially after Cam ran all over us) and kept players in coverage rather than pressuring, and the fact that he never changed that was exploited. Once you get to the playoffs, teams take advantage. I don’t doubt that’s why the Saints made adjustments and torched us, and I don’t doubt that’s why Nick Foles looked God-like after being just meh in the Falcons game. Zimmer just quit bringing pressures, I think he was afraid to. That’s what my opinion is on the collapse of the D.

As far as Keenum, I want the guy back. A couple things about that, number 1 – the players respect him and you can see that pretty clearly. 2 – He’s durable, something we haven’t had in a QB for a long time. 3 – He has Brett Favre’s pocket movement and sling-it skills (take the good with the bad there) and 4 – He looks like he has a ton of fun, and I like watching him play. Bradford on the other hand is stiff as a board, and Teddy, though I like him and think he has a very high upside looks like Mickey Mouse with those gloves on, sorry but true. I’ll hang up and listen.

But I think part of his conservative D play calling was because of injuries as well. Griffin was hurt, pulled out of the Pro Bowl. Rhodes was playing hurt. Sendejo was hurt, and although he was not a stud on this defense, he was solid and allowed Smith to play more wide open in those exotic schemes. Barr was apparently hampered as well. And they lost depth on the DL. All those things probably tied Zim’s hands a bit.

That, and during the season, the 4-man rush was getting to the QB, so the DB’s could kind of forget about the double move routes and jump on the first move. Foles took full advantage of the extra time and double moves and torched the DB’s. It all starts with the DL and pressure, can make the worst DB’s look good.

It was probably injuries that played a heavy hand, especially in the 4 linemen’s ability to penetrate, which they could not do against Philly, but still, to go through the season with a 25% third down conversion rate on defense, that was part of what made them so effective was dropping the LBs into coverage and then on 3rd down either overloading on one side or bringing safeties on a blitz to elicit frantic, errant throws. They didn’t do that at all in the two playoff games. It doesn’t take long to figure out that Trey Waynes isn’t Xavier Rhodes when playing man coverage the whole game. Even without depth on defense, Zimmer still has the ability to adjust pressure to at least TRY and mix up coverages. You don’t need skill players to cause confusion, you just need a better plan. But, at the same time, I still give Zimmer a lot of credit for getting us this far with what has happened. He’s a helluva coach and I think if he keeps the defense intact and even better, we’ll be very competitive as long as he sticks around.

So Dobber fishman what team is the one you favor? There is some super team that will win the SB every year? Who do you favor? I could go on here and bash the Vikings or the Packers or whatever and go all out and bash them here but you can’t say with the record the Vikings had they are losers. How many teams would of loved to have the record we had? Easy schedule? No so what is it? 13 wins and you can’t explain it except to bash them. good luck.

The team I favor is the one that knows how to win when the pressure is on and the competition is at its best. Love them or hate them, the Patriots are my team and have been since Brady was drafted. I’ve been a Brady fan since his days at Michigan (I’m a Michigan fan too) so it was easy for me to be a Patriots fan. Sure the winning is nice but it is the leadership, determination, and never say die attitude Brady brings to the Patriots that I love the most. He never gives up, something the Vikings did on Sunday and in a lot of big games in my 47 years on earth and all of them in MN. The Vikings have never had a guy like Brady to take control and lead the team. Favre was the closest thing to a leader this team has ever seen and he was just a hired gun.
Even I thought it was a forgone conclusion that the Vikings were going to be in the Super Bowl this year but then they did what they always do in pressure situations and fell apart. Call it a curse, bad luck, or they plain just got out coached, this team can never seal the deal no matter how good they seem to be.
I’m sure there are a lot of teams that would have like to have been 13-3 but they also know it would have all been for not if they didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is what these teams play for, not the regular season record. The only thing the 13-3 record gets the Vikings is the 30 overall pick.
Also, the Vikings schedule was tied for 27 toughest in the league based on their opponents W/L record so to say that didn’t have something to do with their 13-3 record would be to ignore statistics. And since the Vikings did so well this year, they get to play statistically tougher teams next year. So to borrow your signoff, I say Good Luck.

I think it’s great that you have a favorite team. Brady is a great QB for sure but he is one of the biggest whiners I have ever seen. He gets sacked and goes to the sidelines and rips his OF line. His coach is known for cheating big time and they fine him and he still coaches. So yes they are a good team but as a Viking team I can’t wait for the Eagles to kick their ass. Vikings have been in the super bowl 4 times and lost ever one of them. They have a young team and a great future with a $60 million salary cap. The Patriots gave up a great QB to the 49’rs. Could not believe it. Brady will not last forever and gave up a great future to replace him. That was a stupid deal for sure. Oh well. We play them next season and we will see at that time how the Vikings do. good luck.

                Doberfishman,

It figures you pick the QB that is probably the best of all time, and you probably knew that he was going to be the best of all time when he was at Michigan and even their coaching staff didn’t think he was their best starter, and the 198 NFL picks before he was selected were just ignoring him for no good reason.

Tom Brady’s or Peyton Manning’s do not grow on trees. New England, and Bill Bellichek are LUCKY they got Tom Brady, and they had NO IDEA what they were getting when they selected him at pick 199. NO ONE DID, not even you.

You pick on the Vikings 13-3 record against the 27th ranked schedule, but Las Vegas who make money on setting the odds had them projected to be 6-10 with that soft schedule this year. So I would say the Vikes over performed greatly because of good coaching and good team play. And in a league where QB’s are overpaid, over hyped, and highly sought after, Keenum got one offer, from the Vikings for $2M for the year, I would say he GREATLY over performed as well.

I suppose you are one of those people that think you are the reason your team is so great too, and that you have an effect on the outcome of their games! Good for you!!

Why is there so much hostility for not being a hometown team fan? I know where Dober is coming from firsthand, because in my younger days I was a Michael Jordan fan. Same reasons dober mentioned about Brady. Leadership, drive, you just knew he had the will to win. I was a Bulls fan while Jordan and his supporting cast was there because it was fun to watch. I’ve never been a Timberwolves fan. The only time period when I watched and went to Timberwolves games was when Kevin Garnett was here. And the Wolves wasted him aside from one year when they spent money on Cassell and Spreewell and made a legit run. I could not have been happier for him when he won a championship with the Celtics. I’m a Vikings fan first and foremost, but I like good football too. It’s just a game within a sport. If you get defensive about it and it becomes your life, then you get what has happened in Philadelphia…

Dober just has a habit on coming on this thread and bashing the Vikings even when they have a record like they had this year. Loosing our starting QB and a great looking RB ect. There are others on here that are fans of other teams as well. My daughter is a 49’r fan and did not have a great year but is very happy that the Patriots sent them a damn good Qb who won 5 in a row I believe since he started for them. I’m glad Dober is a Patriot fan. I’m not bashing him just responding to his bashing time after time. I have to give the Patriots credit for over the years supplying Brady with a good OF line and quality reciever ect. That’s what made him great as he is. Rodgers on the other hand in my view is the best QB right now. good luck.

Well so much for the Garappolo idea. 5 years – $138 million! That sets the bar for Rodgers extension this offseason. Those are crazy numbers for a guy that really hasn’t proved a whole lot at this time but it was the only way the Niners would be able to keep him under contact. In a way this sets the bar for Keenum. Let the games begin!

Wow that’s high. He did make a nice run after he was sent to the 49rs. Patriots will regret this trade in my opinion. Good for him though. Now he can start and show his stuff. I think Keenum will be franshised and get the 22 mil or so. good luck.

Vikes hired John DeFilippo – QB coach from Philly as the new OC. I’m trying to decide if this suddenly opens the door to Foles coming here or what will happen. Spielman made it pretty well known that the OC will have a large role in figuring out the QB situation. I still think they should keep Keenum though. Foles will be expensive after what he did. Probably worth more than the Garappolo deal.

The eagles will hold foles because Wentz likely won’t be ready for the start of the season. Keenum is going to get paid. Vikes need to decide whether to pay keenum or cousins then sign teddy cheap for back up or bradford expensive for back up.

Foles won’t be cheap. You’d need to trade for him AND pay him.

I’m not 100% sold on any of the QB’s out there, they all come with their own risk. The more I think about it the more I think putting the franchise tag on Keenum and letting him prove himself for another year might be the right move. It buys you some time before having to go all in on him. In the meantime they should be looking at the draft for their QB of the future.

The only reason any of the free agent QB’s are on the market is because they come with risk and are all unproven in some capacity. Cousins is the most proven but he still hasn’t shown he’s a true franchise guy that will be worth what he’s undoubtedly going to get paid.

Tag Keenum. At $27 million (the going price) I don’t want to sign anybody for that kind of money. Vikings have a lot more problems then just the quarterback position. They can’t get hamstrung with a killer contract.

San Fran was never going to let Garappolo go so that was a non-starter. As nofish said, Foles is going to a lot cost money and draft picks so either he stays put or some team is going to give up a lot to get him. The Vikings would be foolish to go out and get him but then again, I thought it was foolish for them to get Bradford. BTW, the guy who strip sacked Keenum in the championship game (Derrick Barnett) is the guy the Eagles picked with the 14th overall pick the Vikings gave up for Bradford. Kind of ironic.
Everyone seems to like Cousins but why go get him when you have a little smaller version already in Keenum? If all you’re looking for is a gun slinger, Keenum is the guy and he won’t cost you as much as Cousins.
The talking heads on radio are even suggesting Mike Glennon! <img decoding=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> I think the Vikings best option was already traded to Washington but then again, I’m just here to bash the Vikings. <img decoding=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />
