My buddies and I have been fishing Mille Lacs for the last 3 years and it seems like we can always catch a fish every trip from 26-28 inches. This past weekend we were there and by no means crushed the fish, but the fish we caught were big. We caught four from 27-28 inches. My question is why are these fish not getting bigger? When reading reports you hear of tons of 26-27 inch fish being caught but rarely bigger.
January 17, 2019 at 8:36 pm #712690I’ve never really heard of Mille Lacs producing anything bigger than 28″ walleye. I’m guessing its a genetics thing. Whatever genetic makeup the walleye in Mille Lacs have it just doesn’t seem to support walleye getting bigger than 28″.
If it were a forage issue then you would expect to not see such large numbers of fish in that 27″ to 28″ range. There also seems to be plenty of forage to support large fish of other species.
January 17, 2019 at 9:17 pm #712691I would guess that since Mille Lacs isn’t stocked, that the size could be genetic bound.
My Ol Man fished since the 1940s and never got anything bigger than 30″.
Then nine years ago pulled a 34.5 out of a lake 35 minutes from his Isanti home.
Last big one he ever caught.
January 17, 2019 at 10:17 pm #712692My sister who rarely fishes pulled a 31 inch eye on a tip up about 5 years ago. Other than that its been a lot of 27-28 inch fish. Still hoping to break her record one of these years
January 17, 2019 at 10:18 pm #71269330.5″ is my best after fishing it for 40 years. Takes time
January 17, 2019 at 11:01 pm #712694Buddy of mine I’ve fished with good amount and is an honest guy witnessed a 33″. Took picture for the guy
January 18, 2019 at 2:35 am #712695Just saw a 30 on a resort Facebook page. Nice fish. I have caught a 30.5. Aim tournament winning team had a 30.5 and two 29.5 this past summer…so they are there not every 27 inch is going to become a 30plus inch fish…For most lakes a 30 plus inch walleye is not easily fooled…
January 18, 2019 at 4:47 am #712696Yeah I understand there are some in there. I’m just saying there is a TON of 27 inch fish in there. You would think there would be a few more bigger ones.

January 18, 2019 at 5:06 am #712698I give up trying to post replies. I don’t understand why sometimes it will post and the next time it comes up blank.
January 18, 2019 at 4:45 pm #712699I have 1 30″ out of Mille lacs and I’ve spent a LOT of time on the water. It went directly on my wall. I’m sure I have 100 over 28″. It’s just genetics. The forage is defiantly there.
