Howdy from Texas, My husband and I are planning to go north to cooler air in August. Thinking we will fly into Minneapolis and be up there a couple of weeks. We had been told the Brainerd area would be a good place to find a cabin and boat, but Wow, there’s a bunch of places! Does any body have suggestions of the better locations that might not be covered up with jet skis? We are not looking for troops, just want to enjoy the trip and catch some fish. We’ll be needing a guide too. Thanks for any ideas y’all can spare.

Lake Winnibigoshish. Leech lake. Either would be good. There are a few guides on here that would serve you well on Leech. I know Brian Brosdahl covers Winni.
In August you won’t have much traffic on either. Winni though barely has any cabins on it because of federal land around it.
Lake Vermillion is absolutely beautiful. A little more traffic but big enoug not to notice. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

Give Fancaster or Tom Wilson (Yodi) a shout, they both frequent this forum often and guide Leech. They will get you on fish. Otherwise, try Rainy Lake, beautiful area with minimal traffic. Deron Doright guide service, also on this forum, would be a good choice. And as Oly1 stayed, Vermilion would not be a bad bet either. Regardless lots of options and great places to go catch some fish. Good luck.

Well first of all,
Just what are you hoping for, to refine your search? Are you more high end and looking for some social opportunities? That would direct you to certain recommendations. Or are you seeking more secluded and a remote experience with modest, rustic accommodations? Just getting a feel for what you’re thinking about will eliminate a lot suggestion’s that would be of little use for you. Let us know what you want and we’ll find it for you!
I say Deron at rainy……………less poeple more fish!!!Eyes, smallies ..nortins and crappies will fill the bill here!!!!Go out with Deron and you’ll be back!c63
We are definitely rustic folk looking for clean and less people and attractions the better. We were hoping to find a small cabin with a boat and motor right there and not have to trailer one. I like to stay on the water longer than my husband, but can’t back a trailer for squat! Figured I could run him back to the house for a nap while I went back for fun. We’ve never been up there or know anyone up there, so staying a couple of hours or so from the airport was the plan. That may limit us to more people, less fish and higher prices, unnecessarily.
This is just one of my big adventures were going to pull off before we get too old!
Thanks again folks! ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />
Howdy y’all. Having read your request , and having read all of the responses that have been thrown out there , being a life long Minnesotan who enjoys just what this beautiful state has to offer with its scenic beauty, I must say that Sandy Point Lodge , on Lake Kabetogama would be a perfect choice for you two to have the time of your life. I’m very familiar with all the other options , and have had wonderful times at most of those other choices , but that being said , I would highly recommend calling Gordie or Jennifer Gelo at phone number 218-875-2615 or email them at [email protected] ….. They can set you up with your very own cabin , you can cook your own meals in your cabin , or they have a great restaurant / bar , they supply a nice boat to use ,no trailers would be needed ,they can get you set up with a fishing guide if desired, although I’m sure Gordie would be more than happy to steer you to some good spots on the lake to wet your lines and get to catching some Walleyes , perch , northerns , small mouth bass .If either of you have ever thought of trying out a kayak, well then I’m sure Jennifer would be more than happy to take you out to give that a whirl , that’s right up her alley, there’s just about a endless amount of water to explore up there , be it by a kayak, or by the boat. Jet skis are not allowed there . All nice places that were mentioned earlier , but would be hard to beat this one , I gaurentee it . Enjoy ! ! ! U can tell them Alan sent ya there … A little longer drive but well worth it.
You folks are just great and this certainly gives me some options. Since I started this thread my husband nearly cut his arm off with a chain saw, so I will be the main fisherman and he will be doing what he can with his left arm and resting a LOT!
The no jet ski plan sounds like a keeper to me!
