I prefer jig fishing. Jigging Rap strikes are fun though too!

Any strike is a good strike!  I’m usually a troller.  I love to see boards pulled back or tattle flags drop.  Bent rod with leadcore…  A sinking cork or a peck on a live bait rig…  Let’s just fish!

50 years ago, it was troll troll troll (not to be confused with today’s Trolling)

Then about 25 years ago, it turned to bobber-watching here, and troll troll troll for Billfish in Mexico.

Then about ten years ago, it was still bobber watching here, and cast cast cast for Roosterfish in Mexico.

Now, it is still bobber-watching here, with the occasional bottom fishing, and I don’t know in Mexico as we have not been able to take our last two trips.

Any way I can get them in the boat or on the ice, which most times a jig of some sort. Primarily due to my lack of fishing skills,,, but sure am having fun when Lady Luck swings by on any given day.

I use to be a die hard troller but now I prefer any type of jigging. Whether it be jig and plastic, ripping rap, jigging rap, shiver minnow, etc.  I very seldom use live bait. But I would say the shiver minnow has consistently produced bigger fish than the others.

I don’t open water fish for walleyes much at all, other than our annual trip up to LOW. But, for local lakes, I’ve started trout fishing – and due to that new development I bought downriggers for my boat. Last September was the first time I used my own downriggers on LOW and it was the most fun I’ve ever had walleye fishing. No guides to do any of the work, just two guys, two riggers, and a whole lot of chaos reeling fish, trying to drive, avoiding tangles. Even when you’re not catching fish it keeps you busy.

If chucking spears were allowed that may take the cake.  The natives I’ve seen doing it seem to be having a good time.

Lindy rig is always a good option as well.

I back troll spinners behind a bottom bouncer when the fish are deeper.

Shallow I fish a jig with plastic or live bait.

Shadraps, weed lines, 2.2-2.5 MPH. Early season, after dark 4-6 FOW, original floaters, flat raps, husky jerks trolled at 1.5-2.0 MPH. Late fall, deep water/steep breaks and jigging raps. I’m a firm believer in covering water to find fish and trolling crankbaits is very efficient.

Jig & a minnow, jiggin raps, lindy rig & slip bobber with a leech are all options I use. I bought a couple trolling rods last year and rigged them up with lead core to try something new later this summer.
